Comments:

I ran with my son Richard, age 11. He had never gone more than 3/4 miles and was really nervous. He didn't think he could do this and tried to back out earlier in the day. I told him that he would owe me $18 for the race fee and he didn't like that idea.

We ran at a slow pace for about 9 minutes than walked, ran the rest of the way. Richard did great once he realized that wasn't too bad a way to complete the race. He even sprinted across the finish line.
What would you do differently?:

Nothing. It was such a great thing to run with my son and watch him complete the 3.1 miles. He was so proud and now he can boast that he beat me across the line.
Post race
Warm down:

Went to Smokey Bones for some barbecue.

I'm so proud of both of you (especially Richard, of course!).  I'm loving that Smokey Bones warmdown.

Congratulations! I saw many parent/child teams at the 5k I ran today ... it was great to hear all of the positive reinforcement going on.

What a fun race! So is Richard hooked on running now? Did you tell him his mom got FIRST place in the MiamiMan race? He's got a lot to live up to now. We're going to miss you guys when you move to Jacksonville!

It was really satsifying to see my son finish, especiallywith all the doubts he had before the race. I loved watching him sprint to the finish.

That's so great!  I've always wanted to do that race but the date never works out.  Well, I finally met your wife, now I need to meet you at a race before you guys move away from Boca!

Great race, extremely organized and lots of people come out. I wish I could have run it on my own but it was more rewarding with Richard.

Awww.  You're just saying that because you're afraid to admit he'd beat you anyway!
