Pre-race routine:

Got dropped off at the shuttle.
Event warmup:

It was coooooold. Especially for us natives Angelenos. Kept walking around and stretched a bit. Spotted Xan and spoke to him. He looked primed and his result shows it. We looked around for Chris but it was a fairly large event.

Comments:

It was a blast. I was a nervous wreck all week due to my LASIK surgery on Wednesday. For some reason I thought it would make for a good taper since I couldn't exercise anyway. The fear of having a laser in your eye and downing valium and wine to get to sleep is not an ideal taper :)

The run itself rocked. This was my farthest race I have run and I felt real comfortable. There was never one point that I thought I wouldn't finish or that my pace was out of control. Didn't come close to walking, even on the couple of big hills. I have a nasty habit of going out way too quickly for the first mile. Didn't happen today.
What would you do differently?:

Obviously, not schedule a pretty intense (at least mentally) surgery the week of the race. It wasn't until Saturday I was even 100% certain I would run. I had some minor complications from the surgery and didn't want to run if I had to keep a protective contact lens in place. It was taken out Saturday and eye doc gave me the absolute positive clearance to run.

On the race itself, I know after the fact (ah, how convenient) that I could have run at a slightly quicker pace throughout. Was able to really sprint the last 1/2 mile. But it was also fun to pass scores of people and finish not completely spent which has been the norm for me.
Post race
Warm down:

Stretched a bit and had some water.

What limited your ability to perform faster:

Eye surgery on Wednesday had me stressed all week (and even the previous weeks thinking of it). I hadn't exercised at all since Tuesday. I was also a little paranoid of rubbing my eyes which the doctor told me not to do. I had a sweatband which really helped.

Event comments:

Happy I did it. I am always a little worried about inaugural events, especially one this large but it was pulled off extremely well. Slight starting delay but that is to be expected. All I could think of at the end is do I really have to run this far after swimming 1.2 miles AND biking 56 miles?!

Awesome job Mark, way to run your race and not get caught up.  I know it was touch and go, glad it worked out.  Kept expecting to turn around and see you there!

And I'm with you on the "this?  After a 1.2 swim and a 56 bike???"  One step at a time, my friend

Nice job!
Glad the eye(s) didn't bother you. It was real windy in the O.C. so I was surprised the air was so calm in L.A.

Outstanding race Mark

Even splits on a course like this with the heat and low humidity is astounding.

I suspect that your last minute decision to do this race really paid off big. Kept you from going through at least some of the mental games that taper provides

A Strong finish with a big kick is always the best way to finish a race like this.

Thanks WaterDog. You are right about taper week. Always an interesting mental battle where you can start doubting your training. For me, I was much more concerned about the surgery, so maybe it did relieve some of that.

Cheers,
Mark

1:54 is a very solid debut at this distance. Even splits just shows you're getting to know your body and your comfort zone, which will serve you well when it's time for 70.3. Glad we had a few minutes to chat. Look forward to seeing you in the future. Congratulations on a great race.

Thanks Xan. Are you saying I only did 13.1 out of 70.3 and it took that much effort?! Aiya. Great race.

Thanks Jazz. Maybe you will reconsider LASIK. It took me SIX, count'em, SIX years to go from the time I went to the doctor until I went through with the procedure! I just needed triathlons to push me over that edge. You will know when and if the time is right for you.

Cheers,
Mark

Great Race and Report GolfMark . Your even pace and strong kick at the end is great feedback. It gives you a really good idea of what pace you can maintain at the next Half Marathon or at Oceanside HIM. Think of where 3 more months of training will bring you. well Done !

Hi Mark. Great job on conquering this distance. Uh, 70 is cold? That must have been the daytime high. Thanks for the tip (note to self - don't have any kind of surgery week before race). Congrats!

Congrats on the distance! It was my personal best distance as well. I couldn't even imagine turning around and running another 13.1 to the start line for a full marathon. Whew.
