Pre-race routine:

Coffee and a Bagel and drove out to the race site.
Event warmup:

Looked at the choppy water and looked for a quick escape route..

I hate when you have to park your car a walk away from transition, Oh right I am here for the half iron man race I guess I can walk 400 meters to transition..

Stretched and tried to calm down
Swim
  • 49m 10s
  • 2000 meters
  • 02m 28s / 100 meters
Comments:

I am usually very good in the water this time was am exception, I got sick bad on the final leg and threw up ALOT...

I was going to drop out right there but once the sickness passed I felt a little better and was able to take the swim home and actually had an alright time.

I was ok with how it went all in all.
What would you do differently?:

Nothing, it was just one of those days.
Transition 1
  • 00m
Comments:

This transition was slow as I was trying to get myself under control and get my head into the game again.
What would you do differently?:

Again, nothing it played out ok.
Bike
  • 3h 59m 22s
  • 91 kms
  • 22.81 km/hr
Comments:

This was one of the hardest rides that I have done.

I was pretty spent after it, and the fact that I could not get dry really started to work on me in a bad way.

I found it very hard to keep up the positive thought process during this ride.
What would you do differently?:

I do need to work on my bike alot more and train in several kinds of conditions.

I think this would have been one of those times to have a dry shirt in a special needs bag or at least a little rain resistant gear.

But all in all I think a little more training will work wonders.
Transition 2
  • 00m
Comments:

I think this transition went ok Yea, I was happy with it.
What would you do differently?:

Nothing much I don't think.
Run
  • 3h 32m 11s
  • 21 kms
  • 10m 06s  min/km
Comments:

Well, I think this was actually a very good course.

I think it was more of a x-country course with lots of different surface types and the course had a lot more hills in it then I first thought.

On the day I hated it because I was so tired from the bike that any run was going to be bad this one was worse then I expected.

I found myself walking alot which kinda bums me out but the volunteers on this race were very good and ultra supportive.
What would you do differently?:

Nothing much I was spent from the bike and did not have alot left to give to the run.

The only thing that was glaring was the lack of training for this type of course, I will be better prepared for next year....
Post race
Warm down:

I was cold and just wanted to go home, I just packed up and had some food that was left.

What limited your ability to perform faster:

Weather and being under trained!!

I will not let that happen next year that is for sure.

Event comments:

I was not there to during medals and the other post race stuff. LOL

But the race directors and finish line volunteers were unbelievable!!! They kept the kitchen open for us final 2 finishers fed us very well I think that they made sure there was food left for us that was above and beyond, and gave us a victors welcome.

I felt that I had won the race they the way they were cheering (I think they were glad to be able to go home. :) ) everyone was very kind and supportive.
The race directors were incredibly gracious to allow us to finish they did not have to.

They did state a cut off but did not make us stop and waited for us to finish up.

I was completely blown away by the race crews dedication to making sure we ALL had a race to remember and that we all could walk away feeling like true competitors.

I will be back to this race next year for sure..

I will hopefully be better prepared.

Wow, Roy, I really admire your hutzpah!!! Way to finish, and don't you LOVE volunteers???

I'm really impressed that you pressed through after that swim as well! I was talking to some non-tri friends about strategies for keeping your food down when working at race pace, and they sort of looked at me like I was from another planet!!

You should really be proud of yourself!

Hey Roy,
You should be proud of yourself. It would have been a lot easier to quit than it was to continue. I was thinking about you and Dana while on my long run on Sunday. I wanted to quit because I had a long day on Sat. Also, I found out that my normal route was .8 mile shorter than I thought and would have to make that up somewhere. I really didn't want to do it. I was so close to home and said I should just stop, then I thought "if Dana can continue to race when she knew she wouldn't make the cutoff and if Roy can race under absolutely terrible conditions, then I can continue this run"
So even though you are bummed about this race, consider the fact that you are an inspiration to some of us out here.
Take care and go get em next year.

You rock....sticking out the swim, then the rain and ride and to top it off you finish a 1/2 marathon.  You should be very proud.

Nice job. You avoided the feared "DNF" and now have bragging rights for finishing a grueling race.

Roy,
I thought I had commented before, but I guess not.

I was impressed by your dedication to finishing. You had a hard day and you finished anyway. You did great.

Subject: That Guy Article, Thanks.
Hi Shellee,

I was just reading over my logs trying to find some inspiration in there somewhere and came across an article that you included into your post.

( That Guy Article ) from bikesport and realized that it is so very true... and thank you for including it.

It was just what I needed right now.

Thanks,

Roy
