Hello,

I am a 32 year old father of an almost 1 year old son. I smoked off and on from the time I was 13 until about 2 1/2 months ago when I got a bad respiratory (sp?) infection. Oh yeah, I'm asthmatic ... I know a smoking asthmatic: proving Darwin right since 1987. Anyways, while I was treating the infection I wasn't smoking, after about 2 weeks I felt better and was about to light up again when it occurred to me: I don't want my son growing up with his father being a smoker. So I threw my smokes away and haven't even wanted one since. Despite being a smoking asthmatic I have always been pretty active; riding my 20" at the skate park, snowboarding, rock climbing etc. but now I want to take it to the next level. I'm training 5 days a week concentrating on swimming since that is definitely my weak point right now (I'm running 3 miles twice a week fairly easily and I grew up on bicycles).

I live in Vegas and am looking forward to getting tips and learning all I can about this sport from the people here.

Good luck and good health to everybody!

Jason

Welcome to BT!

"....a smoking asthmatic: proving Darwin right since 1987...." too funny. Congrats on throwing away the smokes and starting a healthier lifestyle. Children have a way of making us rethink our lives.

I would register for a sprint tri sometime in the Spring and use it as a goal to keep you going. You should have great weather for training this time of year in Vegas.

Good luck!

Bill

I'm already decided, this will be my first tri: http://bbscendurancesports.com/rage.html

I am not yet registered but will be soon. My son's 1st birthday is new year's eve so things are crazy here until then.

Thanks everybody and yeah quitting smoking is HUGE!

One more thing: I looked in the mentor's forum and could not find anybody that really grabbed my interest. I am 32, even though I smoked I come from a pretty athletic background and I wouldn't be able to resist the urge to be competitive if I tried. Also I'm definitely built more for speed than endurance so as well as needing a lot of help in training for the swim I also need help in training for endurance. If there are any potential mentors out there that think I sound like somebody they can work with I'd really appreciate the help.

Also, if there is anyone else on here from the Vegas area or the Norcal bay area (I may be moving back soon) I'd love to hear from you.

Thanks,

Jason

Congratulations on quitting smoking. It's the best decision you have made for yourself and your son!

Beware...tris are very addicting!

Congratulations on putting down the cigs!!

Like you, I was a smoker too. I smoked for 15 years before quitting at age 30, 5 years ago. I quit after seeing my dad die a horrible death from lung cancer. You certainly don't won't your son to see that. You've made the right decision.

Best of luck to you and welcome to the group!

Very awesome on the quitting smoking - I know how hard that is to do. Sounds like you've got the habit (sorry, unintentional bad pun) of regular training down so all you need to do is focus it on triathlon. Good luck!

Nothing like having another life dependant on yours to make you reevaluate things.  Your story's shared by a lot of people on here, including me.

Sounds like you've got the right atitude, and you've certainly live in a great location for training.  Good luck on the tri, and happy birthday to your boy.

Good job on quitting and welcome to BT.

If you are still interested in a mentor group feel free to look at my group, I still have room.

Great job Jason, quitting smoking can be one of the hardest things to do! I to am a former smoker. I started smoking when I was 11 quit 2 other times and most recently quite 1yr ago, I'm now 46, you do the math. I was a idiot for longer than you've been living!

Keeping active and focused well help, and when the time comes that those nasty little things start calling your name... take a good long look into the eyes of your little boy and remember what's important!

DON'T QUIT QUITTING!!! This is one of the few times that "quitting is an acceptable option"!

Good luck!

PEACE

Thanks to everybody for the support.  Markquiet, I appreciate the offer but I actually got connected with a group that is kind of based out of the bay area, ca. and I am hoping to be moving back out there within the year.

 Thanks everybody!

Congratulations and welcome to the board!

You are in almost exactly the same situation I was in last year.  I started running after quitting smoking (a year ago last Fall).   I've never looked back.

Best of luck!
