My daughter wants a rat as a pet.  Everything I can find to read says they are great pets, but I was wondering if any has any experience with them.  Please help.

I've bought hundreds and they were all very friendly and personable... right up until the snake grabbed them... after that, not so much.

Rats make really great pets- but make sure you get 2 of them.  They are social creatures and don't do as well on their own.  Also, unless you change their cage at least twice a week, they get kind of stinky.  Some other random info:

Males never stop growing- they can get as big as a small cat!  They are more docile though, and a bit easier to handle.

Females do stop growing, but are more hyper and take longer to calm down than males- but stay active and inquisitive longer than males.

They are very trainable and can learn neat tricks for food.  They also hardly ever bite.

Goodluck and have fun!

Rats make excellent pets. I have had rats as pets for the last 3 years and they are wonderful little creatures. I currently have 3. They are all female and of various varieties. Please do get at least 2. Rats are very social animals and they must have a friend of their own species in order to live a happy healthy life.

Here are a couple sites you can check out:

Please feel free to PM me if you have any specific questions about cages, litter, food, etc.

This is Arwen. She was a black double velveteen dumbo rat. She was such a sweetheart.

FRom everything I read they sound like great pets.  I am just a bit skeptical, I mean they are rats after all.  Would you also recommend staying away from Pet stores and going to a breeder?

Why not just adopt Kid Rock and Mike Krzyewski?  The rat family tree has several branches, y'know...

I work with too much toxicology to think of rats as anything but test subjects.

That said, if I had a pet rat, I'd bob its tail and make it more like a hamster.  Rat tails are just gross looking to me.  Maybe the breeders and stores have tail-less rats?

I miss my pet rat. I had her for a few years. I managed to hide the cage in my room for about a month, then my mom found her. She was extremely smart. She would take out my mom's earings from her ears at night. I used to take her shopping with me, she would just sit in my shirt pocket and pop out every once in a while. She also went to school with me on a few half days.

Who wants to get pet rats and run a 5k with them??

My brother had pet rats when we were kids. Bonnie and Clyde.  They were cute.

We also had a rat living behind our stove for a little while a couple years back (AND two cats in the house, what's up with that???).  Not so cute.

Ok, Now who's going to help convince Colette that I can get a rat. She doesn't so well with rodents or reptiles.

Maybe you could get a cute Chihuahua like Chiclet and dress her up as a rat!

I buy my rats from local breeders. Rats adopted through breeders are generally healthier and friendlier than rats purchased at a pet store. Breeders also have various "Fancy Rats" which is basically different coat and color varieties. If you adopt from a breeder they will also be able to answer any questions you have. In my area, we even have rat shows and expos. Getting from a breeder could be a little bit more difficult than from a pet store because you will have to go through a bit more screening. Breeders will also take back any rats if you decide you can no longer care for them with no questions asked.

Yes. There are in fact tail-less rats although they are somewhat hard to come by. I know that a lot of people get freaked out by the tails but I think it is something that can be overcome if introduced to a tame, friendly rat.

One of the best pets ever. I had a white one when I was kid. His name was Charlie and he was really smart, and very loving. He never bit me unlike the hamsters I had. I hate hamsters.
