Pre-race routine:

Woke up at 5:15am, ate oatmeal and banana. Drank Powerade on 1 hour 20 min drive to Tempe from Tucson. Stopped at Denny's prior to finding the parking lot (was sure glad that I did), parked car in parking garage, waited in the long line (30+ mins) for the bus to start line, froze.
Event warmup:

Quick sprint from bus to Porto-john, as I was 15 mins late. I missed my original start corral, so I hussled to the front of the line to get into a pace group that would keep me from having to pass too many people.

Comments:

The run felt great, the cool weather helped me keep from overheating and the crowds/bands kept me motivated at all times!

The late start forced me to play "catch-up" and pass lots of runners. About mile 5 or 6 I managed to catch/pass the 2 hr pace group and knew that a sub 2 hour run was in the works if I managed to keep my pace.

Pacing was difficult as with the large number of runners, I was constantly zig-zagging through and having to adjust based on those in front of me. Also, I found that the drink stops became quite congested and the pace slowed to almost a walk at times, especially after mile 8.

I enjoyed a strawberry clif gel around mile 10 and began to push to the finish.

Warm down:

Crossed the finish and had to come to a complete stop as the crowds were backing up..I would have liked more room to walk out the legs. Feasted on bagels, banana's (as I was having slight cramping in my upper right hip), grabbed gear check bag and made the long trek home.

Overall: very well run, enjoyable, fun race!

What limited your ability to perform faster:

Crowds

Good job on speeding up to get yourself back on track.  I have done a 5k that was SO crowded that you had to walk the whole thing.  Kind of is a bummer and I would be disappointed if I would have been in that situation in a long run like a 1/2 marathon.

Anyway, good job and it seems like you placed really well in your age group too.  Way to go.

Great job!   I can only imagine how many people you had to dodge to go from the 2:00 pacer to finish at 1:46.

Weaving sucks .......

The Baltimore marathon and half finish together and the merge is right about the 16 mile mark for the marathoners.  So you have these relatively fresh 1/2 people meeting you smack dab when you start to get tired as a marathoner.  This year I paced my friend to a sub 4, so when we met with the 1/2 mary. people we were smack in the middle of the people running 2:15 - 2:30.  Talk about doing a slalom!!

Congrats on a great run despite the traffic.  Get a clear road and you could fly!

Fantastic performance!  Imagine if you didn't have to play bumper cars all along the way!
