Boulder Roadrunners

Overcast
Total Time = 26m 23s
Overall Rank = 43/59
Age Group = 35-39
Age Group Rank = 0/
Pre-race routine:

About 300 calories of carbs (raisins & peanuts) about 2 hours prior to race.
Event warmup:

Light jogging, a lot of stretching. Quads and left calf felt very tight before the race; they loosened up enough prior to the start of the race.
Run
  • 26m 23s
  • 3.1 miles
  • 08m 31s  min/mile
Comments:

Only a handful of people passed me this time! And I made them WORK to pass me. Ran the small hills perfectly (stride down, quick turnover/lean forward going up). I know that I'm still slow, compared to the group of people I'm racing with, but for me I SMOKED this run! (Updated with official time/rank.)
When I first finished, I was pretty excited about my PR, and was hoping that I did better in my age group. It's a bit of a letdown to find out that I was LAST, and the 4 guys that beat me are all ELITE TRIATHLETES, who showed up on a lark... :(
What would you do differently?:

Not a damn thing! I should just keep getting faster with time.
Post race
Warm down:

Walked off about 1/4 mile, after rooting in the last runners. Hydrated well, got some food. My sinuses were driving me NUTS! I can always tell when I've really pushed a run, as I sneeze for like 15 minutes...

What limited your ability to perform faster:

My relative newness to all of this.

Event comments:

This was the last of the summer series. The overall winner got a trip to the R&R Marathon in Arizona in January. I found out I actually won my age group at the 4th race (in the series, my 1st), and got a cool Hind T-Shirt. This will be nice when it starts to cool down some.

Every time that I go and push myself on a run, from my old Army days to now, it's like my sinuses just go nuts. I don't know if it's from breathing in too many allergens, too many natural chemicals released or what. While mentally I felt awesome, physically I was feeling miserable!

The next big thing is the Louisville Legacy Triathlon on Aug 29th, my first real tri. Depending on how I feel after that one, I may sign up to do the Windsor Tri on Sept 5th. If not, I'll do another 5K race. I'll do a 10K in Oct., but ski season will be here soon. I'll probably just train through the winter, and ski of course, and get ready for next year.
