Subject: Swimming Trunks vs. Speedos
When I first started swimming I was using old school trunks because a) I didn't know any better and b) I was NOT wearing a speedo! Then I discovered Speedo jammers (speedos that reach the knee). So for the better part of the last 2 mos I have been using jammers and noticed a difference immediately.  Today I swam at the Y during a birthday party and was wearing my old trunks...it felt like someone was dragging me under water!!!  I once read that swim in trunks is like swimming pulling a parachute! That's exactly what I felt like today!  Even though i am a noobie, I would HIGHLY recommend to anyone swimming in trunks to give Lycra/speedo's (jammers) a try!!

I agree, but I still train in trunks, so it will be easier when I race. When I do my bricks I plant to wear my speedo tri shorts. I don't want to wear them out, but I don't want to wear them for the first time on race day either.

By the way, congratulations on being smoke free!

Yup, there are very few things we can do to buy some "Free Speed" on the swim, but this is definitely one of them. (Buying a decent pair of swim wear)

Jammers are certainly a great way to go.

Save the Cool Board Shorts for lazy summer days on the sand...

Sounds like you just made a case for someone to wear old trunks in training.

If you buy cheaper jammers (my finnis brand ones were $17) they aren't really any more than baggy trunks.   Also, you will likely be swimming at the exact same effort regardless of which type of suit you wear.  You will just be going slower in the baggy ones.   I have also heard swim coaches say that baggy shorts hamper your development of proper hip rotation in the water.  I say go with jammers/speedos if you can

i've heard the same thing, and I could see it being a reality having swam in both types of suits.  Besides if you think about it, if swimming in baggy shorts really made you faster without sacrificing form, then every pro and high school/college swimmer would train in trunks and not the old bananna hammock.  They do make 'drag shorts' which are jammers with poof parachute pockets to add resistance if you want that effect.

This is a bit off on a tangent, but I saw actual swim parachutes at the local aquatic center.

Our entire HS team swam in 'trucks' all through practice unless we did timed sprints.

1st off let me say I'm very jealous of those here who swam before the age of 30. This old dog is learning new tricks, but very slowly. I've been using the baggy, "to the top of the knee cap" trunks thinking that when I bust out the skin tight speedo, I'll fly like the wind. Haha, at least I can dream of swimming fast.

Also, congrats to 1st Timer in NY. I've got friends who started that nasty habit and can't shake it. Keep it up.

same boat---relatively new to swimming, and i started out with the many-years-old baggy trunks. i switched to jammers last month, and i've gotta say that the automatic increase in speed was a good mental boost for the winter.

Another vote here for jammers. Also have the advantage of drying quickly so they are ready for the pool the next day. Nothing worse than starting a training session by struggling into a pair of damp, cold trunks.

yes, but what about "train as you race?"

Do you wear a tri-suit for all your runs/rides?

Wetsuit in the pool?

Have aid stations set up every 1-5 miles?

All the money we spend on bikes/gear/shoes, and you/we can't get a 2nd pair of old trunks. =)

If you like trunks, wear em. If you like Jammers, wear em.

We always seem to try and come up for all these marginal reasons for justifying what we do/wear.

I like jammers, just buying some is lower on my priority list than other things. I race in a tri-suit (and wetsuit), so I don't feel the urgency to get jammers. Whereas a new pair of shoes, or saving for a computrainer is something that will likely benefit my training more.

When I arrived for my lesson last summer with tri shorts instead of the baggy trunks, my unpaid (what a nice guy) swim coach said, "you finally got some decent swimming gear."  I tried the argument that training with trunks would make me faster, but he pointed out that they not only create drag, the cause sinkage and poor form.  I then went out and got some cheaper swimming shorts, like compression shorts, and have been wearing them instead of the more expensive tri shorts.  Chlorine eats lycra so these will have to be replaced fairly soon, but the cost of replacing 10 dollar shorts instead of $40 tri shorts is worth it.

I have a tri suit which I may wear once in the pool, but probably only once.  Again, chlorine is hell on them (so I'm told) as well as the wetsuit.  Best is not to wear it indoors, but if you have to, rinse it like crazy immediately afterwards.  I know I've got to train at least once with it, but I'll try to find some open water for this if at all possible.

While Speedo may be a great brand, "speedos" have got to be banished, forever.

you can get a pair of TYR jammers made out of polyester for around $30.  Chlorine doesn't eat polyester like it does lycra, so you never have to worry about them going transparent (been there done that).

After doing all my swimming in jammers, I wore trunks for the first time last August.  Getting out of the water and having the baggy nylon clinging to my legs was the most disgusting feeling ever.

Your macho score just dropped about 20,000 points.

Ewwwww, wet nylon touching my shaved legs. Ewwwwwwwww. =)

Actually I was just trying to be funny.

But, really, in terms of swimming, almost nothing we do in training/pool (outside of the stroke choice) is like what we do in a race.

Just throwing in another vote for the Jammers!  I have speedo brand and like them.  Learned my lesson on the first pair that they don't go well with hot water in the washer (should have read the tags).  Now I just hand wash in the sink, spin in the washer, and hang dry.

You know you are a swimmer when you have 5 pairs of speedos on because all of them are so worn and chlorine depreciated that they would be see through on their own.

Bingo! During high school swimming, I had one speedo that wasn't see-through, and that was my racing suit. The other 5 or 7 or so were all so thin that I had to wear at least 3 if I didn't want to expose myself to the whole team. Today, I wear a drag suit over my last very thin speedo (last used as a race suit in ~1998) for training and a wetsuit or tri-shorts for competitions.
