The dualthalon and aquathalon both involve running...run bike run or run swim run, or some combination. Does anyone know of "low-impact" multisports like swim bike swim, bike swim bike, swim, kayak, bike, etc, etc, etc

Who says that you can't walk the running sections? Obviously, it wouldn't give you a fast run split, but it's always an option, right? Also, nothing says that you can't create your own race, right? Really, I'm being serious.

What do you have against running?

I used to like running. I just had back surgery, a discectomy, but didn't escape without some nerve damage to my right first sacral nerve...I cannot stand upon my toes on my right foot, or toe off when I walk. I am slowly getting strength back by trying to walk with a normal gait, bicycling (which forces me to use my right calf and hamstrings) and doing calf raises in the water. But when I try to run, I look like a fish flopping around on the side of the pool. My right leg sinks as if I've stepped in a hole in the ground, and my left foot takes a big impact as a result. The whole works jars my back, too. The faster I go, the more it's magnified! I'd like to minimize impact on my back, knees and hips as the subject line says!

I'd be interested inhearing if there are any swim bike combo events out there.
have a friend who blew out her knees and really wants to get involved but can't do the run.

My mom cannot run, but she's otherwise in great shape ( goes to gym 3 days a week ). She bikes well, ( kept up with riding mountain bike around Colorado ). She had a skiing accident ~25 years ago which pretty much destroyed her knee. She's had several surgeries on it, and even afterwards managed to run 10ks for a while before it finally got too painful to continue. She literally has almost no cartilege left.

She could get a full artificial knee, but she'd loose some things that she can do today ( like skiing again! ).

If I could find a swim bike swim, or bike swim bike, she'd do it in a heartbeat. I'm thinking about getting my dad to do a relay, where I'll pick up the run leg, and they can do the swim/bike ( or she could do swim and bike legs and i'll just do the run... hmmm.... ).

There's an idea. Find a partner who would do a relay with you, where you do swim/bike parts, and they do the run?

Resurrecting this thread for two reasons.

First, notice the orignial posting date is 2004...before the AquaBike was announced by USAT. Shouldn't I be getting a little slice of the pie for this idea?

Secondly, regardng my post about running...how far I've come in the past year! Today I went for my third run involving over 30 minutes of continuous running in teh past 3 weeks. When I worte the post above just over a year ago, I was doing only 30 seconds of running at a time!

Thre is an event been promoted by the USAT called "Aquabike" where you just swim-bike. There aren't many events yet but you can find more info at the USAT website.

Aquabike I think is only for events that are 1/2 IM.

I know in NE they had aquabike for the 1/2 IM in June during Mooseman and again in August at the 1/2IM at Timberman. Both events only had about 20 people. They ran it along with the normal 1/2 IM.

Glad to hear your running is coming along after your surgery. My suggestion if you want to do shorter races is do them as a relay.
