Subject: Wind running - paradigm shift

For years I've always said it was better to run and out-and-back run into the wind on the way out (while you are 'fresh') and with the wind at your back on the way back.

Today there is a nice, steady 15 mph headwind and I ran out 2.5 miles into the wind and back 2.5 with the wind and I had an epiphany. I am like a diesel and it takes me about 2 miles before I get 'warmed up' good. So starting out into the wind before my I'm warmed up is very hard. I think it would be better to run out with the wind and then turn into the wind on the way back. The only good thing about running out into the wind is I had a negative split today.

So which do you prefer on an out and back - run out into or with the wind?

Personally, I hate out and back courses.  But that's just me.

To me, it doesn't much matter.  You won't make up lost time / energy assuming equal wind both ways.   I had the percentages, but not with me.  Mostly, I just tuck my head, and keep pushing.

Just like diving, Mike.  Into the current on the way out, with the current on the way back

If it is like wicked cold out then I want to make sure the wind is at my back on the way in.  Otherwise the sweat will make me too cold.  But if it is just normal cold then I don't care.  Well yes I do.  I still want it at my back on the way in cuz I want to get the hard stuff over first and then take it easy on the run in.

why not just run with the wind to your side?

aren't you supposed to be warmed up BEFORE you start your workout anyway?

Technically its the NOT windy side of the wind that sucks...

I always start into the wind, being at the beach I have learned that as the day warms up so does the wind off the ocean, so I know that by the time I turn around that 5mph breeze will be a 20mph wind

There is only one time when wind is good, and that is at your back during the bike leg.  Otherwise, it BLOWS!

when I plan a route I don't look at the wind.  If the wind happens to be at my front for the way out, then so be it.  suck it up buttercup

If you were at a race doing an out and back, would the RD let you run a different route if the outbound leg was into the wind?

Depends on the purpose of the run. If it's a Z1-Z2 endurance workout, it doesn't really matter I just adjust my effort levels accordingly.

If it's a strength or otherwise a "hard" workout I prefer to go out with the wind and come back into it. Builds strength and mental toughness.
