Smithfield, Virginia
United States
63F / 17C
Sunny
Total Time = 1h 05m 11s
Overall Rank = 23/88
Age Group = 40 - 45
Age Group Rank = 4/11
Pre-race routine:

I got up about 6:45, ate a piece of toast with jam and drank a little bit of water. We left the house at 7:30 for the race. Racked bike, got chip and got marked, then had plenty of time to relax. It was fun to look at all the amazing bikes others had.
Event warmup:

Just stretching.
Swim
  • 05m 10s
  • 300 meters
  • 01m 43s / 100 meters
Comments:

It was warm water and really hot on deck. I passed three people, but didn't get passed by any. I flipped my turns on the far end of the pool and just touched the wall to pass under the lanes. I did flip one turn and went under the lane rope, but I felt like I was slow coming off the wall that way, so I didn't do it again.
What would you do differently?:

I hesistated a few seconds in trying to determine whether I could pass someone or not. Not sure if that can be changed in a short pool swim.
Transition 1
  • 01m 23s
Comments:

What an improvement over my last tri. Having the TA right outside the pool made a world of difference. Also, it was pleasant outside, so I wasn't trying to bundle up to stay warm on the ride.
What would you do differently?:

Nothing.
Bike
  • 33m 1s
  • 10 miles
  • 18.17 mile/hr
Comments:

Enjoyable ride.
What would you do differently?:

Get a bit more comfortable on the road bike. I am still getting used to the brakes and gears. I had hoped for a 35 minute ride, so I was pleased coming in under that.
Transition 2
  • 00m 47s
Comments:

This was short because I rode the bike in my running shoes. All I did was take off helmet, rack my bike, take a quick sip of Propel and was on my way. Legs weren't as rubbery as I thought they might be after the bike.
What would you do differently?:

Practicing dismounting and then running with the bike. I took it easy dismounting b/c I didn't want to wipe out then!
Run
  • 24m 52s
  • 3.11 miles
  • 07m  min/mile
Comments:

I was TOTALLY thrilled with this time...my PR!!! When I was running, I felt like I was really going slow. Temperature was perfect.
What would you do differently?:

Push a bit harder!!!
Post race
Warm down:

Walked around, stretched; greeted by Rachel and Josh.

What limited your ability to perform faster:

Not sure I could have done any better with the amount of training I put in.

Event comments:

Course was WELL marked on the streets, and turns were also staffed with volunteers. Very helpful. Since this was the first Triathlon in Smithfield, I wondered if it would have some glitches, be unorganized, etc. But everything was great -- easy for athletes, good food, plenty of volunteers. Weather was perfect tri weather -- I was very grateful...it could've been ugly like the week before!

Fantastic job on the race!  I'm sorry that I didn't get to meet a fellow BTer.

Keep up the good work and flying off the bike into T2 will become so much easier.

The Smithfield race was a fun way to start the season. No glitches and great volunteer support. I fear the run might have been a little short. Finished 5th in my age group (35-39) and around 30th overall. My first ever VTS event. It was fun will definitely be going back. Visited Jamestowne on the way home -- a great week-end
