Age Group Rank = 9/14
Pre-race routine:

Got up at 5:30 and ate some breakfast. When I set my 5K PR at the RunuBiTri, I had two bowls of cereal, a couple rolls and a banana so I figured I'd do that again. I only ate one bowl of cereal and actually had to kind of force that down as I wasn't feeling like normal. After that I took a shower and left the house at 6:10.
Event warmup:

None. Water was too cold for that.
Swim
  • 14m 15s
  • 547 yards
  • 02m 37s / 100 yards
Comments:

I was really hoping to see my pace for this swim bc I thought I did very well. The course had to be longer than 500m though bc everyone's times were too long. I seeded myself at the back bc I am usually a bad swimmer, but I didn't factor in that I had a wetsuit and others didn't. This caused me to have to swim through a lot of people and it was very rough at the beginning. The first buoy came up quickly and I felt really great. I kind of had a squiggly path to the second buoy but still was doing good. About 75-100m after the second buoy I started feeling bad in my stomach. At that point I was ready for the swim to end.
What would you do differently?:

Start more up front in the pack. Probably could have tried a little harder during the part I felt good in.
Transition 1
  • 02m 39s
Comments:

Took FOREVER to get suit off.
What would you do differently?:

Grease my ankles?
Bike
  • 32m 11s
  • 10 miles
  • 18.64 mile/hr
Comments:

This was just a bad day. I felt like throwing up pretty much fromo the last 1/3 of the swim until the end, so I didn't have the power I normally do. The hills made me really suffer as I had to push hard and my stomach didn't want me to. There was a girl who kept drafting off me for like 4 miles and I thought she got a penalty bc the bike police slowed down by us, but upon checking the penalty list I didn't see her. She made me mad.
What would you do differently?:

Feel better.
Transition 2
  • 01m 25s
Comments:

I felt so horrible. I could not run with the bike, so I walked it all the way to my rack which was at the far side of the transition area. I came back to my rack only to realize that I had put my wetsuit on top of my shoes and my shoes were not all wet. I also went sockless which was a mistake bc of a scrape on my toe and all the water from the wetsuit.
What would you do differently?:

Keep shoes dry. Bring socks just in case.
Run
  • 28m 59s
  • 3.11 miles
  • 09m 19s  min/mile
Comments:

Still felt horrible. I was reduced to walking for a good part of this course. My calves were also really tight at the beginning and every step of my left foot let me know I had a sore on that foot and no sock. The thought of dropping out actually crossed my mind, but I could not live with myself if I dropped out and could have just walked to the finish, so I kept going. In all, this run only cost me one spot, due to my poor bike performance.
What would you do differently?:

More bricks! Not feel like puking.
Post race
Warm down:

Had a sip of accelerade and talked to people for a bit. Went up to car, changed and drank my bottle of Endurox. I met some new BT people and talked for a while while watching the kids duathlon. Those kids are hard core. I may have sounded pretty negative throughout this RR, but I still had fun, just a horrible race. That's what is so great about this sport.

What limited your ability to perform faster:

Feeling horrible.

Event comments:

The transition was good unlike at stonebridge, and the bike had enought people to let you know where to go. Only peeve was the swim distance/course was off. Will definitely do it again next year if it fits into my schedule.

Even though it was a bad race for you... you killed it on the bike!

OK, you WALKED most of the run and made a 9:19 minute mile? Dang. I ran it and only went a 10:30 minute mile. You will be fast when you can run the whole way.

Great job on finishing, even though your stomach was not being agreeable.
