Pre-race routine:

Snapple meal replacement shake and bottle of water. Lasagna the night before.

Arrived at shuttle at 5:30 am. Once I was on the shuttle, I realized I forgot my watch and HR monitor - no accurate way to pace :(
Event warmup:

Stretching and short jog.
Run
  • 2h 14m 44s
  • 13.1 miles
  • 10m 17s  min/mile
Comments:

My time was 2:14:44 - about 5 minutes slower than my goal. I made a number of mistakes during and before the race. First, I forgot my watch and HR monitor at home, so I had no accurate way to keep my pace. Overall I went out a litte fast. My first 5K and 10K splits averaged 9:45 miles. This is a little too fast for 13 miles. My 10 mile split was 1:39:07 (9:55 mile), a person best for 10 miles. However, the problem was this race was 13.1 miles. I ended up walking some on miles 10-12 and didn't make my goal. My average pace ended at 10:17, so I lost a lot of time on those 2 miles.

Hyrdration during the race was not great. I only hit 1 water station in the first 10 miles. I really needed water after I skipped the water station at mile 8.5.

Getting aroud the course with 16,000 other people proved to be a challenge, you had to constantly be aware of other runners around and sometimes it was hard to pass.

What would you do differently?:

Stick to my original plan of 10 minute miles. Use my HR monitor. A little more hydration. Train for 13 miles, instead of 10.
Post race
Warm down:

Light stretching. 2 mile walk back to the car.

What limited your ability to perform faster:

Out too fast!

Event comments:

OK. I finished my first half marathon. It didn't go exactly as planned, but if you told me at the beginning of the year I would be running a half marathon, I would have thought you were crazy.

The race itself was great. The bands were great and there were about 50,000 people on the course cheering us on. I had a lot of fun and plan on many more races in the future.

AWESOME!!! Great job. Don't worry about the time. 1st goal was to finish.

Humidity can kill a race, especially if you don't drink enough.

When's the next one?

Not sure when the next run is but I have a 16 mile time trial on the 15th then a sprint tri on the 19th. Hopefully I can fully recover before the tri. It will be interesting to see. Thanks for the kind words. I am having a blast doing this stuff. Hope I can keep it up. We have a baby on the way so things will really slow down again. But hey its our third so we have a little help this time.
