Ok,

I'm having trouble find enough "quality" roads to do my long rides on. I'm looking for some nice rolling hills the odd tough climb (hence Milton as a target area), smooth roads and low traffic. I hate high volume roads with little or no space for me and cars.

I'm looking for a good 60 - 70 mile'ish loop.

Anyone' have any good routes to share?

Dude, you must not be looking hard enough anywhere north or east of Guelph fits your requirements.

1st line/#29 is a 35km stretch from 401-fergus of good cycling. For a 2-3h ride, I'll head out Arkell road to first line. From there you can go:
-north and pick up the Guelph Lake/bellwood tri routes
-south towards kelso and hit 6th line hill and other roads

Either way you can loop the tri courses twice and you'll hit 80-100km. You can also get creative and ride all 3 tri courses for a century.

Here's a map of good bike roads in Halton.

See you out there!

I know a few in the Belwood area with HIGH transport truck traffic on weekdays

(Its the main road of the Belwood tri course, be careful out there)

Guelph is actually a great area for riding.  I'd suggest heading out the north end of town, hit up the GL Tri course and that area, lots of nice hills.  The south end of town is pretty brutal for riding.  You can also head toward Fergus, Elora, Rockwood and like others mentioned Arkell direction is also good.   Since moving to London, I really look forward to the times I am back in Guelph and can go for a ride   Have fun, be safe.

Hey Timmy My fav long ride is acroos the west side of Guelph on county rd 32 go all the way out cross HWY 7 then at the 2nd intersection  take a left (I can't remember the name of the cross road check a map maybe) it crosses to the top of the try-a tri course from GL then I go down to GL and you have a few choices from there to head back. From your end of town you would take Niska to HWY 24 then left to pick up 32. There is a great huge hill just past Speedvale on 32 great challenge, great speed on the return leg (73kph on my last ride). Early morning the traffic is very low and once you are over hwy 7 its country roads with little traffic. I ususally ride it Sat or Sunday mornings let me know if your heading that way and we could hook up.

I went out yesterday for a 60km ride in Guelph and it was pretty good.  We didn't have a set route before heading off so I'll try to remember the roads as best I can.  I did notice the traffic was a little busy at time, overall it was good though.   Lotsa hills

We headed out Arkell rd, took a right at Victoria.  Rode all the way to the last stop sign (at a T intersection) out by the 401.  Turned left and then left again on 32 I believe.  Followed 32 to 2nd Line. (can't remember the township, it starts with an N) its the road just before the townline.  This road was fantastic and we stayed on it all the way to Eden Mills.  At the stop sign turn left, go down through Eden Mills, over the river, very nice scenery.  The turn right at the church (can't remember the name of this road either, sorry) nice climbing though.  We then took this road over 7, all the way to 24 at which point we just headed home.  You are right by Guelph Lake and can continue to add on as Trying mentioned and loop onto the GL course.  Hope this gives you some more ideas.  Happy riding.

Your memory of the details was very close:

1. Next time try going a bit farther on Arkell road and head south on Watson rd- much nicer than Victoria, no traffic and a fun descent at the end. It ends at #34 as does Victoria.
2. You probably followed #34 to 1st line (don't think #2 is paved). This is a nice ride all the way to Fergus and part of the GL and Belwood tri courses.
3. Eden Mills is nice- I think you were on #44/4th line, but it has another name in Eden Mills I can't remember.

Hey there seems to be enough of us that we should hook up and have a group BT ride some Saturday. Do a little 60-70k route? Anyone in?

A Guelph group ride sounds like a great idea.. sadly I am far away in Ridgetown now (and I have a race on Sunday)  Hope you all have a great time, and maybe with a bit more notice I'll be able to make it to a ride in the future.

I'm actually from Guelph and moved to London in Sept 06.  I am now living somewhere else for a few months for school.  I am still trying to figure out some good routes in London and I find the biggest challenges being the traffic getting out of town (its almost better to pack up the car and drive out) and the lack of hills.  I was spoiled by great hills in Guelph.  There is always the path along the river, but it does get busy.  I tend to head out towards Vanick and Komoka direction.  What distance of rides are you looking for?

yeah I do the trails all the time but like you said they're pretty busy. I'm just starting out and right now i'm doing about 30-40k rides but longer soon. Komoka you say? smooth hilly roads?
