i have no will to train.  it's so hot.  i realize that other people deal with more heat but this is san diego!  i was planning on going running this morning, but now it's noon and i have not motivation.  i don't have enough time to go swim, so what do you do when it's hot?

absolutely no idea - I live in the UK!

Would be a nice problem to try and find a solution to....let me know if you need to know how to deal with constant rain and driving wind!

Run after work on a shady trail. I always run in the hottest parts of the day. Shade makes a huge difference.

If you can't bring yourself to do that, bike. The air whizzing by your face ought to keep you cooler.

i'm in vegas and a lot of times i wait until dusk to run because it's just beastly when i get out of work. that way the sun is not blazing on me. that or i just go to the gym, which is better than nothing.

After awhile, you get used to the heat. Drink lots and lots of fluids before the workout (helps if you start doing this a day or so before), and lots during.

I swim in the mornings, and it only takes me an hour (including driving time). I get everything ready to go the night before. I put my clothes for work in the car as well as my swim bag. Then I pack most of my lunch in the fridge. In the morning, all I have to do is throw on my suit, grab my lunch, and go. I then swim for about 30 mins, and shower & change at the locker room at work on the way in. It just takes getting a routine down to be efficient.

In the evenings, I either do a run around sunset time, or do a night ride on the bike. That way, it's not so hot out.

Take water! I carry water on every run over 5 miles, and over 2 miles if the temp is 85 or higher. I will splash a little over me, too. If you run with a cap, you can drench the cap and as the water evaporates it will help to cool you down (note: don't do this with a regular baseball hat, use a lighter, mesh running cap). Shade works wonders, as it can feel 10 degrees cooler near some trees.

Oh, you could also drench a bandanna and drape it over the back of your neck! I almost forgot that trick...

Lara

You need:

1. decent windproof jacket
2. decent hat & gloves
3. gym membership
4. bike trainer!
5. sense of humour for all the rainy days and times you come back looking and feeling like a drowned rat!!

Enjoy - why the move away from paradise?

Shame, I've not been to that much of the US but certainly like SD as a visitor. Enjoyed New England, Boston in particular, Florida, Chicago, etc but definitely find So Cal the place to be! I'd move there in a shot, and have several friends who have, if it wasn't for the family commitments over here. Hope to get some more time to travel again next spring with another long break, but not sure which part of the US to see in Spring - any suggestions for beautiful countryside/mountains/nat parks with something for the kids to do as well?

I either go early in the morning or I usually go to the gym! The gym is my savior!

I hear ya! Just sitting here waiting for sundown and the cool ocean breeze before I head out.

As for the rain, get a reflective vest/wind breaker, a light or two (red-blinky is good), a couple of baseball caps to keep the rain out of your eyes, and some fleece gloves.

Good luck with the move! Santa Rosa is about halfway between SD and Portland in terms of rainy and cold winters.
