WHISKEYMAN EVENTS
90F / 32C
Sunny
Total Time = 3h 16m
Overall Rank = 73/90
Age Group = 40-44
Age Group Rank = 9/12
Pre-race routine:

Didn't sleep well, in the cheapest hotel in Redding (Expedia.com). Woke at 4:00, had PBJ and coffee, a cliff bar around 6:00, and a GU at 7:30. Packed all my stuff, at the race early, lots of time to warm up and realize that there were only 3 rigid frame bikes (mine being one of them).
Event warmup:

Walk, stretch, short bike ride
Swim
  • 23m
  • 880 yards
  • 02m 37s / 100 yards
Comments:

Back of Pack, but I was not the last out of the water!!!! I think there were 5 or 6 behind me.

Yea!!!
What would you do differently?:

Continue to work on swimming - now that I can breath and go the distance, I jsut need to speed Up.

Transition 1
  • 02m 30s
Comments:

Had a hell of a time getting the wet suit off again - stupid little velcro strap is going to be removed, also lots of trouble with the swim cap, of all things.

Used my new tri jersey and hated it, as it is very tight, and I had a hard time getting it on wet, and managed to rip off my race number in the process.
What would you do differently?:

Practice some more.
Bike
  • 2h 03m
  • 10 miles
  • 4.88 mile/hr
Comments:

Hardest couse I have ever done. Over 1 hour of the BIKE PORTION was spent ON FOOT either hiking up with bike (because it was too steep to physically propel the bike up) or hiking down with the bike (because it was too steep and rough to safely ride down.
What would you do differently?:

Need a bike with suspension!!!!
Need to ride the couse a few times prior to the event.
Need to train on steep hills (15-20% and higher). The namby-pamby hills we find on paved roadways do not prepare you for this race.
Transition 2
  • 01m 30s
Comments:

No problems here - grabbed new water bottle and off I went.
What would you do differently?:

Nothing
Run
  • 46m
  • 5 miles
  • 09m 12s  min/mile
Comments:

Went pretty well at first, had to walk some of the steeper sections to keep my heart rate down. Managed to get half a power bar and a GU down. About mile 3, both my quad muscles (at the same time) decided they had enough, and seriously cramped up. Had to do a lot of walking, an kinda limp the remainder of the race.
What would you do differently?:

Quads were blown out by the amount of hill climbing (on foot) that we had to do on the bike. More training in the hills.
Post race
Warm down:

Water Gatorade and a stale bagel, plus an recovery GU

What limited your ability to perform faster:

Scared of crashing my bike on a steep downhill into a pile of rocks and having both my legs broken.

Event comments:

Good, well run race. I do not believe their description of "Scenic climb on gravel service road" really described the mule track that they sent us down. I was short of water since I figured (based on last years event) I would be done in two hours, rather that 3 hours and 16 minutes.
Next time I would use the Camelback, not fuel belt.

Slow&steady,

Way to go!!! Congratualtions on your finish...I too did this race, and I too was unprepared for the "detour" (I also did not bring water)...That was too hilly...A couple of weeks ago, I did the Xterra West in Big Bear and the bike was no where near as hard...Last year I did the Whiskeytown race in 1:48 and this year it took me almost 1 hour longer...
