White Bear Swim and Racquet

Overcast
Total Time = 1h 13m 32s
Overall Rank = 7/61
Age Group = 40-49
Age Group Rank = 1/10
Pre-race routine:

Got to the club early and racked my bike. It was quite cold/windy so I didn't spend much time outside. Agonized over what to wear on the bike. Settled for a long sleeve shirt/gloves.

Drove the bike course with my nemesis from last year (Dave).
Event warmup:

Warmed up a couple hundred yds in the pool.
Swim
  • 09m 12s
  • 600 yards
  • 01m 32s / 100 yards
Comments:

Went out a bit fast. Settled into a rhythm after that. First 200 yds went slow, rest went fast. I completely forgot to count my laps, so had no idea how far I'd gone.

I was in the same lane as my nemesis. This yr I wore a wetsuit, he didn't so I was looking to have some time on him coming out of the pool.
What would you do differently?:

Count my laps so I could push more in the last 100.
Transition 1
  • 01m 43s
Comments:

Could have pushed the pace a bit in transition. It was chilly outside.

Forgot to put my longsleeve shirt and gloves on. I'd pay for that later.
What would you do differently?:

Feel more of a sense of urgency.
Bike
  • 38m 44s
  • 13.6 miles
  • 21.07 mile/hr
Comments:

I never really got warm, so felt a little sluggish. I wasn't cold, but just never got warm. Shoe toe covers helped.
What would you do differently?:

Push harder up the rollers.
Transition 2
  • 01m 5s
Comments:

This transition didn't go too badly. Could feel my toes.
What would you do differently?:

Pretty much all went well.
Run
  • 22m 48s
  • 3.1 miles
  • 07m 21s  min/mile
Comments:

Run felt OK. Settled into 150 HR (low zone 4).

I am a bit disappointed in this run. Shouldn't be, considering I haven't done any z4 running since last August.
What would you do differently?:

Push harder. I think the fact that I knew no one in my wave could catch me made me not push hard enough.
Post race
Warm down:

Wandered around waiting for others (including my nemesis) to come in.

Found my nemesis. He endo'd on the bike while attempting to put his shirt on. Mucho road rash and a banged up shoulder. Hope Dave's OK and this doesn't lay him up for too long. I guess I'll learn from that one. Put your outwear on while in T2, it's safer.

What limited your ability to perform faster:

Cool temps, windy conditions.

Event comments:

Overall, I was faster in both the swim and bike than last year. I completed a longer course in 2+ min less time than '06. I'm a bit disappointed in the run, but a guy can't have it all.

Being upper MOP at all facets has its advantages. No complaints here.

Course: Out north, back south. Wind was NE on the way out, then switched to E ont the way back. Always seemed to be hurting, rather than helping. Out and back nature of the course was good for seeing how far competitors were ahead and behind me. I had 6 folks ahead, and my nearest behind was a couple minutes. Made no progress with respect to placement. Passed noone, noone passed me.

Good Race! Like you mentioned about the Z4 running, I wouldn't stress about it. Your goal is a much longer race this year!

No stress here.

Nemesis update: Bad news. My buddy Dave broke his collarbone and two ribs in his bike spill.

Fast race!  I don't think I'll ever be at a point where I'm waiting for the competition to come in...

Hey, that isn't Dave Goodin you're talking about, is it?  If it is, I met him at Grandma's last year.  Bummer about the collarbone.  Hopefully he isn't in too much pain...

I just hope that someday I can complain about not pushing hard enough cause I am first...  sorry about your nemesis though - hope he feels better soon.
