Pre-race routine:

Got up at 5:30. Made some coffee, took a shower and ate a plain bagel. Kristi was starting in the 5th heat and I was in the 8th so we didn't start racing till later in the morning but we wanted to get there early to wish everyone good luck and make sure we got the space we needed in transition. Once the event got going I just cheered people on for a while as my heat didn't start till 2 hours after the 1st one.
Event warmup:

Got in the pool and swam 100m. Did a few sprints and arm circles and then got ready to go.

Comments:

Swim went very well. I was the last in my lane to start but ended up passing everyone except one guy who seemed to be holding a good pace. Decided to jsut stay behind him and draft to conserve energy. Overall I felt really good and fast. Probably the best race swim I've ever had.
What would you do differently?:

Nothing. It all went well.

Comments:

So i decided before the race to have my shoes already on my bike so I could hop on and put them on on the fly. Well next time I need to make sure that I put the right shoe on the right pedal! I jumped on and realized that the wrong foot was on the wrong pedal. I had to jump off take the pedals off with my hands, put them on and then get on the bike. So over all not a good transition, I probably lost a good 30 sec to 1 min.
What would you do differently?:

Make sure that shoes are clipped into the right pedals!

Comments:

Bike was awesome. Right from the get go I felt fast. I could definitely feel the 6 hour ride yesterday in my legs on the hills, but on the flats they felt pretty good. They said the race distance was 32k but my computer only ready 30.5k.

The bike course was 4 loops and I had ridden it before so I knew what to expect. Basically there were 2 main spots with climbs and the rest was pretty fast and flat. So I figured that I would really try and power up the hills and let my legs recover on the faster parts of the course. This worked pretty well for the first 2 loops, but on the third loop my legs really started to burn.

I kind of had to decide if I should back off or try and keep up the pace. Well last year I always seemed to have a little left on the run and never had a race where I went to hard on the bike. This was a good chance to test out how hard I could push the bike and how going all out would affect my run. I could completely blow up on the run but I figured that these short C races are for experimenting.

So I kept pushing it as hard as I could and ended up not only holding the same pace but I actually uped my average speed almost 1kph on those last 2 laps. Overall I'm very happy with this bike.
What would you do differently?:

Not do a long ride the day before a race.
Transition 2
  • 00m 50s
Comments:

Not much excitment here. I undid my helmet to soon (forgot about that rule) and they made me stop and do it back up and then continue on. Got to remember that for next race.
What would you do differently?:

not undo helmet before I rack my bike
Run

  • 7.8 kms
  • 04m 21s  min/km
Comments:

Run time and pace was much faster then I expected but wasn't as fast as last year. I think that my lackof running in april and part of may as well as the really hard bike slowed me down. However this pace is miles ahead of what I thought I could run right now so I'm very happy.

The course wasn't very fun. The first half of the loop was downhill and I was flying and then the last half of the loop was all uphill and my pace slowed to a crawl. I was expecting to be passed by a ton of people on the run but only got blown by, by a few fast guys.
What would you do differently?:

Run more in training.
Post race
Warm down:

Walked around, ate some food.

What limited your ability to perform faster:

No taper, this race was at the end of a 16 hour training week and I did a 145k long ride yesterday. I'm frankly stuned that I turned out this performance under these condidtions.

Event comments:

Race was awesome. I did much better then I ever expected finished, 13th overall and had my fastest bike leg ever.

Outstanding, James!  I can't believe you pulled off a race like that after such a hard training week.. AND while recovering from PF!!

Now you know, you CAN push yourself!  Just remember about the bike shoes......

Congrats!

Congrats on an excellent race result.  First time I've read of someone starting out with the shoes on the wrong pedals - thanks for sharing that with us!
