Palmetto State Triathlon Series
90F / 32C
Sunny
Total Time = 3h 03m 47s
Overall Rank = 61/79
Age Group = F35-39
Age Group Rank = 10/12
Pre-race routine:

Had my snicker's marathon bar and a diet coke. Drove to the race with my hubby.
Event warmup:

What's a warm up? Stood around and waited for the man who was supposed to deliver the uniforms for me and my coach's other people. Met DeCracker and talked to him. Super nice guy, even for a Gamecock. :)
Swim
  • 35m 15s
  • 1640 yards
  • 02m 09s / 100 yards
Comments:

The swim was not as good as it could have been. But there was a sighting problem, seems someone made off with some of the sighting bouys last night. So, almost missed the first turn bouy. Also, stopped with about 15 other women to yell for the lifeguards to help one of the men who was in trouble and hanging onto a bouy. The chop was pretty good and I think I swallowed a gallon of nasty lake water. YUCK!
What would you do differently?:

I need to practice open water swimming and sighting. I am all over the place when I don't have a stripe on the bottom of the pool to follow!
Transition 1
  • 01m 41s
Comments:

Wet feet and socks are a tough combination, but I gotta have my socks!
What would you do differently?:

nothing really
Bike
  • 1h 24m 7s
  • 24 miles
  • 17.12 mile/hr
Comments:

I had a good bike, I wanted to average at least 17 mph, and I did, so I did good for me. I do realize, however, that this is the area that I need my biggest improvement right now. Even though I did good for me, I was pretty far behind the 9the place person in my AG on the bike. Like 8 min behind the 9th place girl. That stinks! I know I'll improve. I think I need to invest in some clip on aerobars...
What would you do differently?:

I need to strengthen my legs so I can push bigger gears on the bike for longer periods of time.
Transition 2
  • 01m 8s
Comments:

Good transition, took time to wipe my face and put my hat on.
What would you do differently?:

Nothing really.
Run
  • 1h 01m 37s
  • 6.21 miles
  • 09m 55s  min/mile
Comments:

The run starts off with an incline. That pushed my HR up so I had to take a couple of walk breaks to bring my HR down, which it did and allowed me to pick up the pace the rest of the time. Paced myself with a man, and when we had about a mile and a half left I told him to have a strong finish and to come on, so we ran the rest of the way together, picking up the pace a pretty good bit. We caught and passed about 6-7 people doing this. I was giving it all I had and then I saw the hill at the finish, the race director has a very interesting sense of humor. I about died there at the finish, but was very pleased to have had a PR for the 10K. I do wish I had pushed harder during the middle portion of the race, but I'm not sure how much that would have helped me because it may have left me with less gass in the tank for that final push. My run has come a long way. My pace calculated to be just under 10 min miles. Jun 4th of last year I ran a mary at a pace of 14:59, so I've come a long way since then! (I was especially pleased to pass a guy who ran in that marathon with me and had a finishing time then of several HOURS faster than me. To pass him and ultimately beat him by almost 11 min total just tickles me to death! Just because it's such an indication of how far I've come!
What would you do differently?:

Nothing!
Post race
Warm down:

Ate a cookie, my blood sugar dropped there at the end.

What limited your ability to perform faster:

My ability level!

Event comments:

They needed more lifeguards and the extra sighting buoys would have been nice, but other than that no complaints. It was pretty dang hot, but I tolerated it ok.

LOVED meeting DeCracker! Sooper nice guy- hope to hange out with him more at the SC Half. Wanted to get a picture with him and Barqhead (who finished 2nd in our AG after having to swim extra to get around a missed buoy!) We need to have a plan next time for meeting up!

Great job on the swim, especially with the delays. And a 10k PR in that heat, impressive!

Great race, Suzanne! Glad somebody PR'd that run. And lucky us, we get to do it twice at the HIM! Hated that I missed meeting up with both you and De Cracker post race. Y'all are loads o' fun! FWIW, 17.1 MPH average is very good for 24 miles. And we did have some wind to deal with, too!

A real breakthrough race for you, S!  Great job on the run -- I'm sure that the heat slowed down many, but not you.  You ran smart, too, not just stubbornly.  You like racing with a HRM?  I do, too.  It's good to peek at every now and then on the run (I ignore it on the bike and swim, but probably should use it on the bike too...) and keep things in perspective.

Enjoy a short break before ramping up again towards your 70.3 race...you'll rock it!!

Girl you are the shizzle. That Derek is one lucky guy, of course I'd like to hang with HIM and swap fish tales. You were fabulous. I seen you on the run and you were smokin' it. Good job and tell Katie Malone that I owe her big time for her charitable act of rescuing my lame off the run course. I loved running with her. It's going to be tough hanging with you and Pam o and having to genuflex and kiss your rings each time we meet. Can't wait to see you guys at the half.
