still trying to decide what to do. did 8.8 miles this afternoon (w/ the girls) - the farthest i have ever run in my entire 32 years! i was able to pace myself pretty well. looking at the hal higdon's training for novice half-marathon, the numbers aren't that far off from what i've been doing to get ready for the 10k. i've been focusing on increasing my speed, so i would drop that goal for now and just focus on distance. after today's run, i feel like i could up my weekly milage with enough time to be ready. i'll see how my legs feel tomorrow, but if they are okay, i think i might do it. here's my pace/hr info for today's run. i'd love some honest feedback from the runners about whether or not my legs and ticker seem up to the challenge. my average hr was 158, which is higher than i think i would want it for the half, but i have a almost a month to work on pacing. i tried to do the first 2 miles in zone 3, the 3 laps around the lake in zone 4, and the last 2 miles in zone 5 (which i wasn't able to do - hr stayed too low). the laps are funny because i'm still getting used to the new hrm.

lap 1/2 (2 miles) 142 26:54 pace: 13.2
lap 3/4 (1.6 miles) 160 19:14 pace: 12
lap 5 (1.6 miles) 161 19:12 pace: 12
lap 6/7/8 (1.6 miles) 161 18:52 pace: 11.7
lap 9 (2 miles) 169 25:03 pace: 12.5

Great job on the time!! I'm also following Hal Higdon's half marathon training (but am only in the 2nd week of it) and i have to ask...is that your knee on your icon? It looks pretty painful..

yup! i should put up a picture now, as its looking MUCH better. long story short - fell over on bike, knee broke my fall. it was all superficial, but looked pretty impressive none the less. i was just looking at the schedule and really the runs aren't bad at all (never thought i would be saying that!). the longest is 10 miles! i almost did that today! all of it seems doable for me. i have a month before the race i'm thinking of, so i feel like i have enough time.

Autumn, if it alls seems doable then I say go for it!  The worst, absolute WORST that is likely to happen is that you walk a little...but if you're up to almost nine and you have a month left..I guess that does break the "10% per week rule" a little but not by much.  Especially if the longest run in the program is 10 miles anyway.

Besides, you did that pushing your girls, right?  That right there is enough to push up your hr!  If you can do 8.something while pushing the stroller thingy just imagine what you could do without it.

I say go for it

I say go for it too. Getting to the half marathon distance is (relatively) easy. It's going beyond that that's hard
Like my marathon coach says. Listen to your body. If after your long runs you feel like you're going to die then it might not be too good an idea. But if you feel strong. then go for it.
Where is this half mara anyway?

Great stuff! Good luck with it!
Having followed your training and your stories of running while pushing the kids. I think you'll have no problem endurance wise.

yes, w/ girls, as usual. it adds to my hr as well as my time (i average about 1-2 minutes extra per mile when i am pushing the jogging stroller). still, my average hr was abut 158, which isn't so bad. and i'm awful about the 10% rule!

Go for it Autumn---just remember to start out slow--you know, negative splits.  And if you have to walk a little, that's okay.  Enjoy yourself!!

thanks for all the support and feedback. i have already given myself permission to walk if i need to, but i'm hoping i can pace myself well and not have to walk at all. for my first 5k, 8k, and tri, i had to walk for at least a bit, so who knows. my last 5k and tri i was able to 'just keep running, running, running...' i will wear my heart rate monitor for sure, even if it means chaffing again (like at my last tri)...i just don't have enough running intuition built up to know if i'm going to hard until its too late. its funny, my two running partners (besides the girls) are my brother, peter, and one of my best friend, sonja. both have done several half marathons. when i told them of my plans, peter said 'you're nuts' and sonja said 'you'll be FINE!' i think they are both right!

Autumn, have you tried putting some bodyglide under that hr monitor?  I know chafing hurts

Autumn,

If you are getting close to the event, I do not know if I would really try to increase your pace - I would focus on getting in the long runs, and practicing hydration and fueling on the run. My only 1/2 marathon experiance was this January, I was able to get a couple of 10 mile runs in, but never really got around to the 11, 12, and 13 practice runs - and it really hurt me on the last mile or two.

I do not use a HRM so I can not help you there - I guess I just base my pace on "how I feel". You certainly do not want to start out to fast - I started out with the back of the pack, and it was a great feeling to be able to pick off the slower runners toward the end of the race.

Good luck, great job on your running improvements,

Dennis

yes, after this last 5k experience, i will be starting at the back this time.

i am also planning on just focusing on my distance at this point. i have been using my hrm and keeping my heart rate low while maintaining an average pace (about 11-12 min miles).

speaking of increasing my distance - i did almost 9 on tuesday. the next long run will be another 9 a week from sunday. the lngest is 11 miles in 2 weeks. since i did 9 already, could i make those long runs a little longer? like do 9 this weekend instead of 6, 11 instead of 9 next week, and 12 the week after???? or is this increasing too much?
