Pre-race routine:

Got up at 4:00. Showered, ate oatmeal and a bananna. Drank water and gatorade on the way to the course. As I got to Lake Geneva I pulled into a gas station for a visit to the bathroom, etc. It's about 5:15 and one guy there is it seems trying to get directions. He's a spiffed up and my guess is that he was finishing his night as instead of just starting his day. Well there's another dude who is on his case about something. It didn't seem that they knew each other but who knows. Well they're outside now and it looks like they are about to throw down here pretty soon! Do I wanna get involved with this or get to the race? Things simmered some but just a bit bizzare. Got to where I decided to park and then had to ride bike about 3/4 mile to get to transition area.
Event warmup:

Got setup, hung out and waited, and waited and waited. See the transition closed at 6:30 yet my wave didn't leave till almost 8:00. I didn't even put my wetsuit on till about 7:30 when half the field was already on the course. Really did no warmup, just stretching, etc.
Swim

  • 01m 39s / 100 yards
Comments:

After Elkhart Lake I wanted to make sure that I didn't go out too fast. Just tried to get a good even pace that would be a similar effort to what I do in the pool. At times I got into racing with many a crowded field and then forced myself to slow down some. Turn buoy came up pretty fast and kept a nice pace all the way in. Pretty good swim overall.
What would you do differently?:

I got caught on the inside on the way out and ran into a few peeps off course coming the other way. Also as we passed buoys I got squeezed a bit and bumpted around but nothing that slowed me down too much.
Transition 1
  • 02m 52s
Comments:

I need to sit down to get wetsuit over my ankles and off so that slows me down some. Got other stuff on OK. I really don't run through the transition too much as I'm really trying to get HR down.
What would you do differently?:

Not too much

Comments:

My plan was to really kind of hammer this thing after getting HR down. I was happy to get my HR down to 150 at times and for the distance I was fine with being in the 160s. As I got going my legs felt pretty good really so I just had a blast hammering really. Being in a later wave there were lots of people to pass and I think I got passed maybe twice although I think I caught one of them back again. This was probably the most fun I've had biking in a tri. Oh, also I was under the impression that the course was going to be 17.1 miles. They made us turn at a point I thought I would have to keep going! What's going on? I think this race is under new management so they changed things a bit. Well now I really had to hammer knowing I didn't have to leave another 4-5 miles in the tank.
What would you do differently?:

From the first hill at the beginning I hammered up and just kind of kept that type of effort. It was just an absolute blast so I really wouldn't have wanted to change anything at all. Great fun!
Transition 2
  • 01m 42s
Comments:

As I racked my bike the handle bar got actually stuck in a cross bar. Arrgh! Struggled with it for a few seconds and it came out alright. Got out pretty quickly then.
What would you do differently?:

Run a bit harder with bike.
Run

Comments:

Tried to go an easy pace at first. Felt like I had a decent amount in the tank yet so cranked it up a little. I really thought I was going faster than this. The last mile I felt like I was really movin' for me at least. Then I thought I was closer to the finish than I actually was so I was really trying to give it all I had. Only to find out that I still have a ways to go yet so I was really struggling but again felt like I was moving fairly well so I am still shocked that I didn't avg under 10 min miles. Oh well - still an OK run for me considering some hills.
What would you do differently?:

Run faster I guess
Post race
Warm down:

Crossed the finish line where the fam was there cheering me on. Walked a bit but after being pretty winded I seemed to recover really fast and after a few minutes I fest really good!

What limited your ability to perform faster:

My running I suppose but all else I feel pretty good about.

Event comments:

I liked the race. A bit disappointed in the PB&J sandwich for lunch. They need to update information on websites because there is confusion about the sprint distance.

I would say this race is the one I feel best about of the six I have done so far. I felt like I was a bit smarter than at Elkhart but that OLY distance is a tough one. Sprint's you can kind of just hammer while HIM's is all about pace and OLYs are somewhere in between. At any rate I'm pretty excited about this race and I'd like to continue to do maybe one Sprint per year.

Great Job. Don't worry too much about the run, It is a hilly course which really brings the time down.

Well done!

Nice race.  I hope that your spirits higher after this one!!  Glad that you didn't have to break up a fight before the race...that would have been a bummer of a way to start the morning.

EXCELLENT JOB!!!  I'm impressed, great times all around for you!!!

I agree, the OLY distance is a tough nut...need to go fast, but still a long enough race to hurt you.
