Age Group Rank = 19/38
Pre-race routine:

Woke up at 6:00. Ate some multi grain toast with peanut butter and a big cup of coffee. I had all my stuff packed from the night before so I doublechecked my list and loaded up the car.

I got a pretty good parking spot and rode down to transition. Got body marked and set up in a matter of minutes. Met up with a friend from work and his wife. Chatted for a while. Hit the bathroom again and ate a Clif Bar.
Event warmup:

Ummm...walked over to the water.
Swim
  • 25m 48s
  • 984 yards
  • 02m 37s / 100 yards
Comments:

Swim went pretty bad. I had to breathe every 2 strokes. It was my first OWS and it showed. I never got into a ryhthm.
What would you do differently?:

Train in open water. Get coaching
Transition 1
  • 02m 10s
Comments:

For my 1st tri my transitions went very smooth.
What would you do differently?:

Brough a bucket to sit on. I sat on the ground to put my socks on.
Bike
  • 51m 53s
  • 14.91 miles
  • 17.24 mile/hr
Comments:

I felt really good on the bike the whole race. During the 1st uphill I had some trouble with gearing and lost my chain. It took me a minute to get it sorted out. It sucked getting passed by all the poeple I went by for the first few miles.

I felt fast on the bike passing people the entire time. I passed way more people than I expected. I guess all the time in the trainer paid off.

I heard TC117 and my family cheering for me on both laps. It was a nice boost.
What would you do differently?:

Nothing.
Transition 2
  • 02m 33s
Comments:

Another good Transition. Stopped to stay hello to the family for a few seconds.
What would you do differently?:

Nothing
Run
  • 28m 46s
  • 3.11 miles
  • 09m 15s  min/mile
Comments:

1st mile the legs felt heavy but it was a smooth run. I never really pushed it very hard. I just ran at a nice comfortablr pace. Some funny stuff on the way back. I saw "Run Keith Run" chalk. I didn't know it was for me but then I saw "Go BT" so I thought maybe CitySky was responsible. It put a smile on my face. Then I saw "Post a Race Report Please" and I was in a full out laugh. People were looking at me strange :)

I saw TC117 before entering the chute which was cool and gave my family some high fives just before the finish.
What would you do differently?:

Run harder. I left a lot in the tank.
Post race
Warm down:

Walked around and hung out with the family.

What limited your ability to perform faster:

Swim training / coaching. I need to lose more weight.

Event comments:

Awesome race in an awesome city!!

I saw the BT and the Run Keith Run thing too! I wondered if BT= Beginner Triathlete, guess it did! Congrats! My experience sounds alot like yours. First OWS= yuck. Anyway, that just means we have a lot of room for improvement!

Great race report. You did awesome for your first tri. I feel your pain on the swim - this is an area that I'm working on to get better.

Very nice meeting you and the wife. Glad you had such a nice race for your first venture into TRI. The swim thing takes a little getting used to, but you got it done.

Very nice bike and run splits!

Now you need to sign up for a few more races!

Big congrats on completing your first tri. I'm sure you're pumped. I'm also finding OWS is a different animal. I guess there's no substitute. I'm required to say you did well on the swim -- we were in the same wave, and you got out of the water 20 seconds before me

Good luck on your next one !!

Wow Keith, fantastic times!  You had a GREAT race!

Yeah I guess some chalk before the 'run Keith run' must have gotten rubbed off, maybe didn't draw thick enough.  There was a "go BT - beginnertriathlete.com," so the BTers would know this was for them, then "Don't Panic(Tour)" immediately prior to "run Keith run."  Glad the remnants cheered you up though!    Sounds like you didn't even need it - you had a fantastic race, really.  Did you say your first?

If that's the case, then... CONGRATULATIONS, TRIATHLETE!

Man, great race!!! I am bummed I missed those markings! I was too busy trying not to throw up to even bother looking around, lol.

Also, if you want to practice OW swims, I HIGHLY recomend heading over to Lake Wenonah. CGI hosts OW swims every thursday. It's about 30 minutes over the bridge (with traffic). Go to www.cgiracing.com and you'll get all the info. I did it twice and it really helped me get aclimated to the water.
