Pre-race routine:

Talk with some BTers and =a short jog to warm up.
Run
  • 13m 56s
  • 2 miles
  • 06m 58s  min/mile
Comments:

I went out pretty fast, but I always do this. I felt pretty good, so I kept it going for the full 2 miles. This was probably too fast of pace, but I think the pace on the bike hurt me more than this short run!
What would you do differently?:

Maybe slow down a little, but it feels good to go fast.
Transition 1
  • 00m 59s
Comments:

A very bad transition for me. First, my visor gets stuck on my shoe attached to my pedal. So, I have to stop, take it off, back up a little, and then throw it 10 ft or so back to my area. Well, I must have knocked my shoe loose, b/c after I started running again. I hear someone holler SHOE!. I backtrack again and the nice guy hands it to me. But I still had to stop to put on this right shoe. Arghh. I probably lost 10-20 seconds.
What would you do differently?:

Figure out how to use rubber bands to keep my shoes from dangling. Aaron reminded me of this today. Thanks!
Bike
  • 1h 04m 2s
  • 23 miles
  • 21.55 mile/hr
Comments:

Well, my Polar S625X stopped working so I didn't have a HR number to pace off of, and my magnet must have slid down my spoke a little like it does sometimes, so I didn't have speed to pace off of. So, I basically just went hard the whole way! I felt pretty good, but I knew I was pushing it.
What would you do differently?:

SLOW DOWN, and learn to take my own freaking advice. I was just telling the people in my mentor group to "save some gas" for their run. Well, I'm a hypocrite; pure and simple. Why can I give good advice, but not follow it myself. I basically think that even though I'm hammering and my HR is firmly planted near LTHR or above, that I'll somehow magically be able to still run well off the bike. Well that didn't happen...
Transition 2
  • 00m 47s
Comments:

Nothing eventful.
Run
  • 55m 43s
  • 6.2 miles
  • 08m 59s  min/mile
Comments:

As with most of my brick runs, I, ironically, feel pretty good the first mile. I think I hit the first mile mark at a little over 7 minutes! I faded very quickly however as I was just simply spent from a hard run and bike before this 10K! I tried to stay cool by pouring water over my head and this helped, but it soaked my shoes which sucked.

Basically, this was one of my toughest runs mentally. I think my legs and heart were holding out pretty good, but I seriously lacked the mental strength to maintain a decent pace, and I'd stop and walked for 15-30 seconds! I did this 5-6 times, and I normally never have to walk! I just didn't "feel like" pushing. I was exhausted mentally!
What would you do differently?:

Treat mental training seriously and find ways to build mental strength. I also haven't been doing much muscular endurance tempo runs that would simulate an effort like today, so I'm really not that surprised that I had difficulty on the 10K.
Post race
Warm down:

I felt really bad after I finished. I could tell that I was really dehydrated as I felt chilly a couple of times on the 10K. I grabbed probably 6-7 glasses of water and drank them immediately and I poured again as many on my head. Then I just need some space to cool off so I found a shaded picnic area away from the crowds and just sat down for 10 mins or so to cool off.

After regaining composure, I chatted with a bunch of BTers which is fun as always.

What limited your ability to perform faster:

Overall, I need to learn how to pace better given the distance of the race. I raced this like a sprint, and I just not fit enough to do that. Also, develop my mental strength so that I can push through rough spots.

This wasn't an A race for me, so hopefully I'll be better prepared for Timberman in 7 weeks.

Event comments:

Overall, a fun race but was disorganized at the start and could have used at least one more aid station on the run course!

A view people I talked to shared the same sentiments about the lack of aid stations on the Olympic course.

At some point I'm going to meet everyone.

How messed up is it that you were in the top 15% overall yet barely in the top half of your AG? I hate our age group. :p

I agree, I thought I read it wrong at first.  Don't worry about the advice, I do the same thing.  I usually go with the "do as I say, not as I do".  I is hard to lay back when you feel good.  I hope I am able to layoff next weekend.

You did a great job considering the HR monitor and bike sensor problems.

Well done!  I used to do the same thing swimming in college - the ole "fly and die" approach.  Works great at first, but it can come back and bite you.  Still a strong race, though!  Great job!

Looks like you had a great race, although the heat probably beat you down out there. I know how it is... you are running... the heat is zapping you and all you can think about is walking and you finally give in.

Great job! You were very fast considering the heat and having to run without the proper hydration.

See, you have quite a nice fan club here!! I only dream of being able to push myself like that some day!! Everything I do is slow and I always walk some on the run. The only thing I MIGHT have going for me is determination. If I could bottle some up and send it on down to you, I would But I sincerely think you did wonderfully well! And if it had been an A race, you KNOW you would have brought home some hardware. Your body does what your mind says. Today your mind said go out and enjoy a speed practice day!! Well done And great recovery after. My recovery takes about a day and a half currently. Those of us in the very very baby stages of triathlon find your conditioning level to be amazing!

wow that is a brutal age group... great race though, and good thinking about hitting the shade and drinking lots of water when you done.. after reading all these race reports it seems everyone mentions the water stops and heat/humidity.  getting chills when you out in the heat working out is not a good sign.

great race and hopefully I'll meet ya in person at one of these races.. but that would mean I have to show up

Good job! I used the rubber band trick my last tri and it really does seem to help me out. I'm glad that even with the set backs you were able to enjoy the race and walk away with a good overall experience; I personally think your times were great.

Great race, David!  Sorry to hear about the transition problems -- those are frustrating.  That is still a great run.  Don't feel bad about walking in those conditions; even some of the local elites were having to take walk breaks yesterday.

Great race, and really good to see you again.  Smokin' bike time, granted it wasn't part of the plan.  And that was one rough 10k, so don't take the performance too negatively.  I believe you definitely have the right approach in taking it from the perspective of mental training.

Sounds like you'll definitely take what you've learned and perform great at Timberman.  Thanks for the race report.  Congrats on a solid race!

Great race.

It's always hard to tell, in short races, how hard to go on the bike.  I have that same problem.  Even so, those are good run times.

David - nice to have met you yesterday.  Great job in the heat on both the ride and 10k.  I had the same problem as you - I simply went too fast too early.  You listened to your body, though and the short walks probably did you a lot of good.  Congrats.
