Pre-race routine:

-Got up at 4:30 with Carolyn
-Had Vector with Milk that turned out to be quite disgusting (sat in the car too long the day before)
-Had a bagel with PB and a bottle of Amino Vital
Event warmup:

-No warm-up, after years of swimming with no warm-up, I decided to go with the tried and true method of chatting!
-Ate an espresso love GU 15 minutes before swim start!
  • 20m 4s
  • 1500 meters
  • 01m 20s / 100 meters

-Really good swim for the first time using my wetsuit other then a little 1800m test swim 2 days before
-Kinda went off course a little bit at one point
-Sebastian (ancientdude) kept up the whole time and we were side by side most of it, and he had no wetsuit!!! Crazy guy :)
What would you do differently?:

-Try the wetsuit out a few times before the race!
Transition 1
  • 00m

-Great transition!
-Girlfriend screamed "I LOVE YOU" at me as I was running with the bike, so that made the transition even better!
What would you do differently?:

-Nothing! Went SUPER smooth!
  • 1h 22m 32s
  • 40 kms
  • 29.08 km/hr

So I've been working on my cycling quite a bit, and apprently it STILL wasnt enough! I felt a TON stronger on the climbs, especially up the super steep parts, and was able to keep pedalling and not stop. The only thing was, my cadence got up to about 110 on the climbs and I couldnt bring it down, my body wouldnt stop my legs from spinning.

I watched some of the FAST guys go by, and their cadence was probably around 75-80 and they were speeding by me on all parts of the course, it was ridiculous. I havent had ANY coaching and any real advice from people, save a few articles here on BT, and I think it really showed this race. I had this misconception that I needed to spin more to get up hills, not have a slower cadence with more power going into each rotation of the pedal.

Nevertheless, I improved my bike time from my only other Olympic distance Tri by 4 minutes, on a MUCH MUCH MUCH MUCH tougher course. So I am extremely happy that I am making some progress, even though it seems to be quite gradual.

I'm planning on joining a local road cycling club that has rides to cater to slower riders (me!!!) so I will join up with them soon!
What would you do differently?:

-Even more time in the saddle
-Forget about swimming 3-5 times a week and spend an extra 2 workouts cycling!
Transition 2
  • 00m

-Again, my girlfriend (Carolyn) was there and she was cheering me on, it was absolutely amazing (she's very shy with cheering but really gave it her all!)
-The announcer was talking about how amazing of a swimmer I was!! Probably decided to leave out the fact I lost about 85 places after the bike leg :)

What would you do differently?:

  • 43m 20s
  • 10 kms
  • 04m 20s  min/km

Ok, so I got off the bike feeling GREAT! Probably because to get prepped, I spun the last 2km on the downhill sections to get feeling back in my legs, and WOW did it work.

From the very first 2km I passed about 20+ people that had just blown by me on the bike!
(I was especially proud of passing a guy who was riding a Kuota Kalibur who just blew by me and when I said "Great job man!" he just sneered and said "Sure"). No I wasnt a jerk to him, but just ran by and kept a lid on my sometimes big mouth!

The first 2km were VERY good for me, got into my stride right away and really could feel all the brick workouts and running clinic sessions going to great use!! Then the sun came out and the hill(s) started. Simultaneously.

So now it was a little warmer, probably about 33-35 degrees celsius in the shade. I just thought to myself "Ok, no problem. You're sensitive to the heat, just use the aid station water on your head/chest". So I did this, at every aid station I would take one big gulp from the cup, then dump the rest on my head or down my shirt, and WOW, did that make a difference. I never once felt overheated, even with the absolutely GRUELING uphill 90% of that 3km.

So I hit the turnaround, and booted it back down the almost neverending hill. I must have passed at least 10 more people on the way back down the hill.

Once the bottom of the hill came, I saw 3 people that were within my grasp, 2 guys and one girl. One of the guys was a super friendly guy that passed me on the bike and yelled "Dude, you got this, kick it into overdrive buddy" in an exhausted tone. He was the farthest ahead. The girl was struggling a bit, with her coach (or maybe boyfriend) telling her "cmon, it's just one lap of the track, PUSH IT!". She did for a few seconds, but died off and I ran past her yelling "Keep going!!!".

The other guy saw me and booted it for a few seconds but met a similar fate and died off only moments later.

Now, I caught up to the last guy and we didnt say anything to eachother, but raced our hearts out to the finish, with me finishing a paltry 1 second before him!!!
What would you do differently?:

-Nothing!!! I can't believe my time on such a ridiculous course, especially since I have no running background whatsoever, well except for the training since March.
Post race
Warm down:

-Saw my girlfriend and Aunt and Uncle at the finish, kissed Carolyn, and ran immediately to the lake!
-Lay in the lake for about 15 minutes to cool off and then headed to the hotel to check out!
-There was a free buffet for athletes but unfortunately I was worried about getting charged money for checking out late so me and Carolyn headed to the hotel.
-Also, my boss from the pool I work at was there with her boyfriend (who placed 2nd overall... WOW) and I chatted with them for a bit before heading out.

What limited your ability to perform faster:

-Apparently lack of experience and knowledge regarding la bicyclette!

Event comments:

-DEFINITELY doing this again next year
-Amazingly organized and TONS of fun!
-The pictures below show me after the race before I got in the water, and then me while I'm in the water, happy as a clam!

Nice work Derek! You had a killer swim time and then the bike and run times are really good too considering you're a relative newb to them and it was a tough course. I think I might do this race next year too, sounds like you had a blast!
