Boulder, Colorado

5430 Sports Corp.
91F / 33C
Sunny
Total Time = 2h 54m 7s
Overall Rank = 593/1415
Age Group = M45-49
Age Group Rank = 49/106
Pre-race routine:

Got up, ate oatmeal with banana. Had everything ready including the drink for the drive this time. Drove to Boulder, bit later than I wanted. Got stuck in a bit of traffic to get into the reservoir. Got there at about 5:30. Found a great spot in transition got setup, chatted with some folks.
Event warmup:

Ran for 10mins or so, swam for 5-8mins.
Swim
  • 24m 59s
  • 1640 yards
  • 01m 31s / 100 yards
Comments:

Good swim, got stuck in slower traffic from earlier waves after rounding the first buouy which slowed me down for that leg. Found more open water after the second buoy and got back on pace.
Drifted of course a bit on the first leg.

Good swim with a good effort, not too hard, still good time.
What would you do differently?:

Keep a closer eye on the top guys. If I draft I know I can easily stay with them all the way.
Transition 1
  • 02m 10s
Comments:

Pretty good trans, no major probs with the wetsuit.
As I do not have laps on my HRM i knew I had to take a couple of secs to set it to bike.
Bike
  • 1h 25m 38s
  • 26.1 miles
  • 18.29 mile/hr
Comments:

Climbing old stage was the hardest thing I have ever done. Going down after that, in the cool shade with the great views was awsome.
Good steady effort for the rest of the race. Really tried to save legs for the run. And tried to learn pacing myself.
What would you do differently?:

All of the 48 finishers ahead of me had a faster bike leg. Push a bit harder next time, I was probably a bit conservative.
Transition 2
  • 01m 33s
Comments:

Was a bit disoriented. Had a great spot went right past it..
What would you do differently?:

Better focus on transition spot and something bright to grab my attention
Run
  • 59m 44s
  • 6.21 miles
  • 09m 37s  min/mile
Comments:

Started out good up that little hill, I did save some legs on the bike! So that worked. HOT HOT...decided to walk through the aid stations to make sure i got enough to drink. Tried to speed up after the turn around but could not keep it up consistently.
What would you do differently?:

Build more base endurance.
Post race
Warm down:

Warm down was really a cool down. Sat in the shade with two cold wet towels on top of me.

What limited your ability to perform faster:

Need more base endurance and fitness. Paced well.

Event comments:

This was my first Olympic. I wanted to break 3 hours and achieved that.
Good mental approach, patient on the bike before the climb and in the final stage as well. Run was tough.
Based on HR good very near LT physical effort.
Still learning and improving. On to the next race.

Great job on your 1st Olympic and reaching your goal!  You had an awesome swim.  Old Stage is tough and we all struggled up it and the run was HOT!  I don't know of anyone that had a good run.

That was a speedy swim!! Congrats on your first oly and exceeding your goals! Can't ask for much more than that

Old Stage is a beast ("Cruel and Unusual Punishment" ran through my head several times on that hill!!!), as evidenced by your max HR! Yeowch!
