Subject: IM training and trouble sleeping

I am doing IMWI and lately; as my training has been ramping up. I have been having trouble sleeping at night. I go to be around 10:30 at night and for the first 2 hours I sleep very hard. Then I wake up, either hungry or needing a sugar fix. Then the rest of the nite I toss and turn like I cant get comfortable with a little bit of sleep in between. The sleep I do get is very restless and not deep; I think last night I woke up 10 times. Then it is hard for me to get up at 7am when the alarm goes off.

I have taken simply sleep, benedril to try and help me sleep thru the night but none of those seem to help because I still wake up a bunch. My legs and arm muscles will also ache during the night and I tense them up and stretch them out to ease the pain.

Anyone else experience this?

I have the same issue right now. I find if I get a swim in anytime before bedtime I will not sleep well, so I just swim in the AM. I also find that I did wake up hungry every 2-3 hours. Now I eat a bowl of cereal and a cup of cottage cheese and that usually will hold me till the morning - ish.

Try moving your workout to the am and going to bed earlier. That seems to work for me.

When my training volume is high, I find that I sleep better if I have a bowl of cereal shortly before bed. I don't get any of the hunger in the middle of the night. Also, make sure you're well hydrated before bed. Try stretching and doing some massage before bed as well (foam roller or The Stick). And, lastly, IM training forces our lives to become very busy. I find that I sleep better if I allow myself at least a few mins (10-15) to just relax in bed and watch TV or read just before I go to sleep...even if it causes me to stay up a few minutes later than planned. Being on the go ALL DAY, and not taking a break until I turn off the light and hop into bed usually results in me not having a great night sleep, because then my mind is running a mile a minute. But, we're all different. That's just some stuff that helps me . Good luck. Sleep tight!

This is a common problem in multi day ultra cycling events, specifically Race Across America. I have found, from racing RAAM 3 times, that 2 aspirin 20 minutes before going down offsets the adrenalin rushing through my system that causes me to not sleep.

Just wait until just before the race and also the week or so after the race...

Not sure I get the "...well hydrated before bed..."

I have to do the opposite (stop fluid intake about 4 hours prior) or else I am up all night taking a weeeee.

I am having the same adrenline rush before bed as described above. I have been having a horrible time falling asleep (thus the late night posts on here) and then can't bear waking in the morning

I was sleeping great until I swam/bike/ran the Moo course last weekend. Now I toss and turn reviewing my plan/backup plan on each of the facets. Arg.
