Subject: The season is over due to injuries :-( How to train now

So, unfortunately Plantar Faciitis has gotten the best of me - I think it is time for me to realize that I just need to let it heal, after two tris and hardly being able to walk for weeks afterward, I just need to face facts.

Having said that, I certainly don't want to throw in the towel, but am not sure it makes sense to continue on a training plan that is geared toward a specific race.

I've reached out to see if I can put together a team for a final event in August, hopefully that will work out and I can do the swim leg.

Any advice on how to approach training from here?

Concentrate on getting your foot(s) healed.

You should still be able to swim, swim a lot. Can you still ride the bike? . Have you thought about taking up water running to preserve your run fitness until your foot heals?

Make some lemonade and become a terrific swimmer. With most of your workouts devoted to it, you can make huge gains.

I sliced my shin from ankle to knee cap down to the bone 2 years ago (with a serious bone bruise/contusion) so I concentrated on core training until I could heal enough to swim.

Healing is very important so put your efforts elsewhere... Yoga is also good for mind and body

Good Luck!

Find a new goal.  My tri season ended after only one tri with a flare up of my achilles tendon problems.  I can still bike though and so I am getting ready for a century ride later this month.

So how about getting ready for something like that on the bike?  Or find and open water swim race to do?  Or look into finding an aquabike race?

Just some random thoughts.

Perhaps it's a good opportunity to focus on some of those more neglected areas of tri training - core strength, flexibility, nutrition and technique.

Sorry you're injured though, it's a lonely place.  This community definately makes it less so though.

I hope you're up and at 'em quickly.

i wanted to thank everyone for their words of encouragement!

i found a new workout plan - swim focused, i figure even though it's already my strength, no reason i shouldn't just really kick butt in it

also involves biking - i just took the run workouts out of it, i find that even the eliptical bothers me

it's an 8 week training program, hopefully after that,  i will be healed and ready to start the path back to running

i think i have a team put together for a tri at the end of august, just need to confirm

i love the idea of OWS and/or aquabike, living in nebraska, that can be a bit of a challenge

any advice on how to find races that have an aqua bike division would be most welcome

thanks again for the great community support!

I have been having an issue with ITBS since December.  I tried to train and run through it ultimately making it much worse.  Since realizing that I wasn't going to make it better and not wanting to give up the entire season I switched focuses and am now doing a full distance Aquabike in a couple days.  Heck, I have even logged a little over 3000 bike miles this year reminding myself that I am building a great base for next year and I'll try to work on running again in the offseason.

 Best of luck!

I've had PF on and off since October as well as achillies tendinitises...I've ridden lots and lots and become a better cyclist as at times I couldn't run and then there was the bike crash that took me out of swimming and running too.

Riding doesn't bother either and often I rode 4-5 times a week.

If you are great at swimming, spend more time cycling but only doing two sports you really can spend a lot of time doing both...4 workouts a week at each is only 8 a week.

I did a sprint tri relay with my 12 year old daughter 2 weeks after my crash...she swam and ran and I biked...it was great.

Look around for different treatment options. There is a great thread on the injury forum about PF and how different folks have dealt with it.

Heal up that heel!

I'm not running right now either because my doctor suspects I have a stress fracture.  Initially, it was only two weeks, but I find out my test results on Monday to see if I can get cleared for running.

Anyway, I've found pool running to be a decent substitute because  I get the mental benefit of running.  I don't use the jog belt or anything because it feels more like a workout.  Here is some more info and an 8 week plan if you are interested:

When my feet were painful, I just upped my swim and bike mileage accordingly. I did not run AT ALL for 3 months. Then I basically started over. I would run 1 mi, then 1.5.. then 2.... it sucked because I wasnt pushing myself, but I knew it was making my feet stronger. It worked, and I no longer have any issues with foot pain.

You can always search active.com for "aquabike" and see what you get:

I see that the results include two races put on by my favorite company, HFP, here in Ohio:

Thanks for the info and links!  I will definitely check them out

Going to focus on the swim first and bike second for the next 4 weeks, I found a couple of partners to do a team for an event at the end of august - i'd love to kick butt in the swim!

I have had plantar faciatis too!
I focused on my swimming, and put absolutly NO weight on my foot the rest of the time. I had a pretty bad case and I was in crutches for over a month. The crutches do help a lot. you can also do this one excercise that my physiotherapist made me do. Roll a tennis ball around on the floor around your heel. I dunno if it really worked but its worth a try!
Hope you get better soon!
