New triathlete in Texas

Welcome Tricia! Great luck on your upcoming tri--you've got lots of time to prepare.

Keeping your knees from hurting after running ... depends on what you're doing while you're running. Slowing down could help. Taking some walk breaks could help. Icing afterwards always helps.

 No experience here with knee issues, but I do have experience with Texas - I just moved from Houston!  We have a GREAT group of beginnertriathlete people in Texas, including our very own super-insane JeepFleeb (Aaron) in Fort Worth itself.  If you'd like to see what they are up to with training and racing, visit the Texas forum too.  You get to it by scrolling down to the "U.S." link at the bottom of the forums list, then "Texas."

Welcome!  My first tri was the Benbrook in May.  It was so much fun that I'm now training for the Benbrook's woman only in Oct.  too.  Fantastic!  BT is a great place to log workouts and meet people who have the tri bug!  Good Luck with your training.  Hope to see you on the Trinity Trail. 

Welcome to the site from a former transplanted Texan.  My first tri was in May in Wisconsin and the bug has bitten me too.  You'll meet lots of friendly people on this site and get lots of usefull information.  You don't want my advice on the hurting knees, I recently tore my medial meniscus running and am waiting for surgery

I had ACL reconstruction surgery on my right knee in high school and they took most of the cartlidge in it too (it was torn all up)...so I've expected to have knee problems as I don't really have shock absorbers...incredibly enough, the more I run, the less I hurt. I also lift (not way heavy, but to develop good endurance strength total body), which helps the legs not be as hard on the knee.  I don't know if others would recommend this, but it works for me: prior to a long run I take two excedrins (or Walmart equivalents)...it helps keep the soreness down and gives me a little caffeine boost..I'm not nutrition or doc or anything, but this works for me and my distances just keep getting longer.

I'll be just south of you in Central TX come November once I redeploy, just joined this, and it's great with Texans everywhere!!
