Pre-race routine:

I was really not looking forward to this race. Didn't sleep well and had some really weird dreams. In one of them I kept forgetting things in T1 and kept having to go back. When I finally got on the bike, my chain snapped. Got it fixed at the mechanic tent. Finally got going and somehow launched myself off of a treestump about 40ft in the air. I was alright, but the bike was in pieces. So when I finally got up at 5am, I was REALLY not looking forward to the race. No coffee at the hotel. Forced down yogurt, 1/2 PBJ sandwich and 1/2 banana. Stopped at McD's for some bad coffee. Got to the race site, got transition setup, but kept forgetting things in my car (like the dream). Met up with Eric, Wade and Mel. Asked Eric if I could DNS.
Event warmup:

Jumped in the water and swam a few yards, water felt really good.
Swim
  • 27m 31s
  • 1640 yards
  • 01m 41s / 100 yards
Comments:

Really pleased with the swim. I started way outside and gave myself plenty of room. Breathing and nerve problems that I had in previous races were gone. As I turned the first buoy, I started thinking that maybe I could finish the race. I got out of the water at 26 mins and started the run towards the TA.
What would you do differently?:

Sight more often. Probably could have saved 30-40seconds by navigating better.
Transition 1
  • 01m 16s
Comments:

My rack was at the door to the bike start. Probably could have gone a bit faster, but I didn't know exactly how I should pace the rest of the race so I was conservative
What would you do differently?:

Go full throttle
Bike
  • 1h 12m 35s
  • 24.85 miles
  • 20.54 mile/hr
Comments:

I was a bit worried about the first 3mi out and last 3 in. Out of TA there is a moderate hill and then a dive down a The Hill. I hit 38mph on it, but knew I would have to climb it coming back. After that it was mildly rolling with some downhills to recover. As my body parts started checking in, I started getting more and more confident. Tried to keep my speed up without killing myself. Wanted to save something for The Hill on the way back to TA. Missed the bottle hand-off. Saw a guy wipe out right in front of me on the turn onto Lake Logan Drive. A PELOTON of about 20 riders blew past drafting and pace lining, really pissed me off (2 drafting citations for the entire race!). As I approached The Hill I check my average and it was 21.45. Suddenly I was doing 8mph and wanting to toss my cookies. God, that hill was a bitch, and right before the run! I am really pleased with my bike overall. The rides with Inside Out have definitely made a difference. I didn't do any one thing great but overall I'm really happy.
What would you do differently?:

Try to eat more. Could only get one gel down. Also, maybe wipe out right in front of the Peloton and take all of those bastards down with me.
Transition 2
  • 00m 45s
Comments:

Again, I was right by the bike finish so I was in and out quickly. Could have shaved a couple seconds if the guy on the other side of the rack had left me some room.
What would you do differently?:

Nothing.
Run
  • 51m 32s
  • 6.21 miles
  • 08m 18s  min/mile
Comments:

Legs felt good heading out of TA. Felt good hearing all the folks cheering us on. Took it easy for the first mile to get my legs moving. picked up a bit at mile 2 and tried to keep steady to the turnaround. Started running out of gas at the turnaround, but had hope as the rest was downhill. Hit mile 5 and started to hurt. Started the mental games to keep myself going and finally hit the finish mat, but the BASTARD DIDN'T ANNOUNCE ME! I'm kinda peeved about that.
What would you do differently?:

Train more on the run. Pleased with it since it was about the time I did at Racefest. I wasn't way out of line with the faster folks except for the run. Can really take some time off of that I think.
Post race
Warm down:

Got my recovery drink and some more water. Walked around and stretched. Plenty of food: sandwiches, fruit, bbq. Watched Wade, Mel and Eric finish

What limited your ability to perform faster:

Just me.

Event comments:

I am thrilled with how I did. The course was great except for The Hill. I am going to do this again next year. Will have to plan earlier for a better place to stay.

Wow, awesome race!  You have improved so much over the season.  Loved the comment about taking out the Peleton.  Wish you had gone back to the announcer and made him say your name.  "Say my name, ."  LOL

You should be very proud.

Great race, Keith!!!! You're charging right up to the FOP!! Good job! Might I suggest that you find another way to take out the Peloton so you don't lose any time yourself.

Nice job there Keith!  It sounds like you had an excellent race.  That is a tremendous amount of progress in a very short period of time.  You should be quite proud of yourself.
