Subject: RE: Sale on the Garmin 305

Exactly what do I need to mount this thing on my bike?

this thing? https://buy.garmin.com/shop/shop.do?pID=8544

or, do I only need this thing? https://buy.garmin.com/shop/shop.do?pID=8622

There is an additional strap of some sort included in the first kit...do I need that? It's not clear to me just from the pics.

Thanks!

The first link is the full kit - I refer to it as the triathlete kit.

It comes with a velcro hand strap, a bike mount, and all hardware. There are new watch pins that normally hold on a watch strap that are designed for this.

Essentially, your 305 lives its life with no strap on it. It has 2 metal pins where the strap used to connect.
The velcro strap has a hard part on it that clips into the 305. The bike mount has a very similar part that the 305 clips into. It is a one hand 1 second operation to get it in or out of these. It makes it much less cluttered on your bike than using the normal strap around something that makes the bar larger.

This is a really great design IMHO.

The second link is just the bike part. You do not want this unless you will only use the 305 to ride. When you run, you will have to put your normal strap back on it and that will take a few minutes and has a good chance of losing those little watch pins.

The second link is mainly for people with more than 1 bike (like any self respecting human should have). They get the first link kit and then need to add to more bikes

I have a somewhat basic cycloputer (mph, avs, max speed, time, distance) is there any reason to get the cadence accessory? I guess it would be nice to know pedaling speed? I just dont see any benefit but maybe I am missing something.

Right now when i run, I just run and wear my Suunto X3hr, but not the heart rate strap because I broke the part that goes around your back, sensor still work if I hold it in place. I tend to use mapmyrun.com to estimate my run distance. So I can see where I would benefit during running.

Looking for a reason to buy the cadence accessory.

Thanks

Some people care very much about cadence, so could care less.

There are some recommended guidelines about cadence and if you care about that follow such advice, then knowing your actual reading is a good thing.

Go to the first page of this . . . someone has the link to the actual form. Plus there is a post telling you can go to garmin and where to find the special offers. The rebate is not through the seller, it is through Garmin no matter where you buy it. But you have to buy it by Nov 30. It is a mail in rebate.

The rebate form is found in the Powerbar link I posted to in the first page.

No. I believe there is only one rebate per person. You'd have to have a second address to mail the rebate to.

Edited to add: But I did get one rebate on a Forerunner 305 and one on an Edge 305

What if i used my gf's address? Would i also have to put it under her name or would my name be fine under the 2 different addresses. The second garmin would be her X-mas gift.

I copied that from the garmin website. It says that you can do a total of 5 rebates. But can I do 2 for the same product? Has anyone else done this?

It appears that you can do 5, but if you are questioning, maybe you should call Garmin.

I'm just a lurker here, but wanted to mention that my hubby saw the Forerunner 305 on sale at Costco.com at a discount -- $179.99 plus shipping. That's the best price I've seen on it so far, and I think it would still meet the req's of the Powerbar rebate. Just wanted to mention it for people on the lookout.

Here's the sale info from the site:

Limited Online Offer:

$25 coupon is reflected in the price. Valid for orders placed November 20, 2007 through December 10, 2007. While supplies last.

Online price $204.99
Less coupon -$25.00
YOUR COST $179.99

Yeah I had been told about the costco thing, but had not seen it online till tonight. I had previously checked out if it qualified for powerbar (while waiting for it to show up online), and as far as I can tell it does. There may be a rush on costco.com

Well, need is a subjective term. . the Edge is a better bike device, if only by a little. It mounts better than the foreunner with the kit in that it is more traditional bike mount. The edge has a larger screen as I recall which is easier to see while riding.
The new edges look to be awesome, but are very very pricey (like $700).

Anyone have any idea what they'll want in the form of "original receipt" when purchasing online? It's not like I walked into a Costco and have their store receipt, I'll just have whatever I print off my computer at home for the on-line order. Anyone ever had a problem with that type of "receipt?"
