I've been suffering from an irritating little sinus infection for a couple of days. Not enough to make me weak - just enough to make me sneeze a lot and get congested. While swimming and biking last night all symptoms seemed to go into hiding during the exercise session. Granted the first few pool lengths were a little miserable but once my pace got on I felt great. The bike ride on the stationary bike at the Y was the same. Lots of sweating, but no runny nose. 10 mins after stopping, the itching, sneezing, runny nose starts right back up.

I'm seriously considering jogging in place constantly while in my cubicle all day just to see what kind of funny looks I get.

You're obviously allergic to sedentarianism (otherwise known as couch-potatoitis)!

Ever notice that a headache goes away if you get an adrenaline rush? Maybe it's the same thing, your endorphins are pumping away making your body ready for action, keeping your cold at bay while you're working out.

Of course, that's my totally unscientific theory on the matter, and to test it you really should jog in place all day in your cube and report back to us.

Are you sure you have a cold?  It sounds like you have allergies.  Do you have black rings under your eyes (aka "allergy shiners"?  You're just coming out of ragweed season.  The itchiness you described sounds more like allergies than a cold.

As for the nasal clearing, here's what an article I found said, "Exercise releases adrenaline, also called epinephrine, a natural decongestant, which may explain why a run seems to clear nasal passages."

Its tough to tell. I usually get sick from my kids giving me those big old snotty kisses. I figured I was sick only because my whole family has gone through boughts of fever, headache, vomiting, etc. I always just seem to get the minor symptoms - never really getting very sick. Certainly could be allergies though. The itching and burning is deep in my sinuses. No black rings that I can tell, then again - my wife always told me I was a little abnormal.

I had mentioned this to my doctor once, and she said that when you exercise, it causes dilation in your nasal areas thus opening up your nasal passages and clearing your congestion. I had to ask her, since I noticed that whenever it was cold out my nose use to run like there was no tomorrow.

Well, it can be difficult to tell a cold from allergies.  Here's something I found on www.webmd.com about the difference: http://my.webmd.com/content/pages/3/3608_1127.htm?lastselectedguid={5FE84E90-BC77-4056-A91C-9531713CA348}  Again, though, the fact that you have itching in your sinuses sounds like allergies (check out the symptoms of allergic rhinitis).  http://my.webmd.com/hw/allergies/hw33490.asp?lastselectedguid={5FE84E90-BC77-4056-A91C-9531713CA348}

If that sounds like what you have, try OTC Claritin.  I use it for my seasonal allergies and it works pretty well.

Hope you feel better.

I have this same occurance, in either cold or warm weather, my nose runs like a spring fed stream. If I am runing or cycling I have become very proficient at, uhh, clearing my nose, without, uhh, having to wipe my shoulder afterwards. Oh yeah, I also check my left and right before performing this maneuver in a race. Clearing your nose on someone is not the nicest way to say hello. ;-)

I was raised in rural Pennsylvania. Up there we folks called that the farmer's blow. (and always make sure your mouth is open when you try it) /evil grin
