Total Time = 1h 10m 50s
Overall Rank = 85/841
Age Group = 40-44
Age Group Rank = 13/74
Pre-race routine:

Woke up at 4:45 a.m. Had granola bar and OJ. Rode bike 3 miles to event site. Got primo transition spot and hung out with a friend and walked all Ins/Outs. Sipped Accelerade lightly until walking to the swim start.
Event warmup:

Rode to event site and 300 yds of swim warmup 5 min before my wave.
Swim
  • 12m 26s
  • 880 yards
  • 01m 25s / 100 yards
Comments:

Went out pretty hard until around the 1st buoy. Tried to settle in, but it took a long time to get effort level down where I wanted it. Last 1/3 was just right.
What would you do differently?:

Settle in quicker.
Transition 1
  • 03m 10s
Comments:

Includes 250yd run across soft sand from water to transition. Really drove heartrate up.
What would you do differently?:

Nothing
Bike
  • 31m 39s
  • 11 miles
  • 20.85 mile/hr
Comments:

Good bike, not great. It took too long to relax and get HR down after T1. 2nd loop was 24 sec. faster than first. Fun course. 2nd loop was packed as the later waves were on the course by then. Some big disperities in speed.
What would you do differently?:

Relax
Transition 2
  • 01m 4s
Comments:

Solid T2. Could have found 5 sec.
What would you do differently?:

Not much
Run
  • 22m 30s
  • 3 miles
  • 07m 30s  min/mile
Comments:

Felt awful for 1st mile, then settled in OK. This was a good run for me. I've made a ton of progress in my 1st season...7 months ago I ran a 8:46 pace for a 5K in my 1st race.
What would you do differently?:

Run harder in 1st mile. I'm going to feel crappy no matter what, so I might as well run at my proper speed.
Post race
Warm down:

Met family right away and took a couple pictures. They left and I cheered on a couple of freinds. Went back to transition spot only to find my front tire was flat. Fixed that (the tube was split right at the base of the valve). Packed up and rode home. How great is it to only race 3 miles from home?

What limited your ability to perform faster:

Time in the sport. I am happy with my performance for a 1st year athlete.

Event comments:

Good race, close to home. For the pricey entry I would have expected something in addition to water, oranges and bananas (like a bagel or muffin) at the finishing area food table.

I'll definitely do it again.

Scott - great job in all 3 events, but in particular on the swim and the run; you've really reduced your overall times in those events. I've read some of the other race reports on this race. Sounds like the run from the swim exit to the transition area was really tough. Great job on this race. 01:10:50 is a fantastic time.

Wow you did great - especially on the run! And yes you are right - for a sprint race you might as well run at a hard pace - at least it will be over quicker!

Congrats on having such a great race! Your time rocked! Sorry about the second lap of the bike. I was one of those slow people! Of course, we were all a lot happier on our second loop when the fast people were on to the run and we had the road to ourselves! I didn't have to hear "on your left" nearly as much!

No worries, it's not because you were slow, you just started after us.  You had a great 1st race.  Congratulations!

Scott
