My front brake pads are just about shot, and I am low on money. Can I swap the front and rear brake pads since the rear brakes are still in good shape?

And put the "shot" brakes on the rear?  Sure.  Just don't ride near me.

A set of brake pads will set you back less than $10.  Seems a bargain compared to risking a crash due to worn pads.

Depends whether they are shot, or just about shot.  If you can still see the little wear indicators, you might get away with just tightening the brake cable.

Might tell you something about how you brake too. Technically, the front breaks should wear out first. The majority of your breaking should come from the front. Although most people don't. The back should be used first to avoid going over the handle bars, but as soon as the back breaks are on, the front should do most of the work!

And yes, you can switch them, but get new ones if you can!

During a ride last saturday I stopped in some random bike shop 50 miles from home since my pads had just gone to metal on metal (yeah, I know, I thought I had one more ride in them).   Replacement was $15.  Triathlon doesn't have to be expensive, but if you can't afford some necessities... like brakes.... come on

Well right now I am down to gas money and race entry fee money, so...no I can't afford it. Beside you really don't need to use the rear brake unless the road conditions are poor.

Swap away... You will be fine. Ive been there, and I know what it is like to not have $10... not fun. I remember being a kid and using my shoe on the front tire to slow down... thats what you do when you really have no money

You should totally do what I did......marry a doctor, or as I like to call her, my sugar-mamma.
