Subject: Pay it forward - Donate Your Old Gear to a Newbie (no requests pls)
So, I was looking at a bike forum's classified section and they have a sticky (maybe we can also, if this takes off) there called "Pay it forward" based on the movie. Not only are they using it to promote the themes of the movie (giving something at no cost and maybe the goodwill will spread) but also to keep a central post so that people know where to go. I have seen several threads pop up here and there giving free stuff away and then several replies saying that I wished I knew to look or where to look. That thread also reminded me of when I just started triathlons, a fellow BT'er, ChrisM, gave me his polar heart rate monitor. All he said was to give it to someone else when you are done, which I then gave it to luv2flyjrn a bit later. What I'm saying is, I know there are many BT'ers who have things that really they don't care to part with and it may not be worth their time to sell it. It's just cluttering up their garage or closet. And there are also a bunch of BT'ers who are starting out, who don't have the funds to start this expensive sport. I'm not saying that to give everything away for free, but just if you have something laying around that you don't feel like selling, you can just give it to another BT'er who may need it. No use saying all this without starting it, so here it goes. I have a large Sugoi tri top. It's a Team Javelin tri top which I have never worn except to see if it fits. I also have a medium bike jersey by Canari. It's just a little too colorful for me. This is used but I washed it so it's clean.

Wow what a great idea. Since starting my Tri journey, I have lost 60 some pounds, and wondered what to do with some of my nearly stuff as well as some of the stuff I have upgraded from.

Because of this, I will look for some things to pay forward.

If still available I would love to receive the Tri top. And yes, I will pass it on when not needed.

Thanks

This is a great idea.  It's how I got my wetsuit and I managed to give my trainer and seat away under this premise.  So I'll be looking for some stuff to pass on.  My wife is secretly cheering in the background Laughing

I second the idea. I dont have much to offer right now though since I just started out. would that bike jersey fit someone who is 6', average torso size?

I doubt the bike jersey will fit you but if you want, I can still send it out if you want to try it. If it's too small, then you just post it again here. To give you some comparison, I am 5'10", about 165, and average torso also, and it was very snug.

That HR monitor worked great, Now one of my friends (nearly 50 ounds over weight) is using it to prep for a tri in April. I have a few tri-tops that I can also offer up, let me get pics and stuff. It is all about getting others to try a tri.

Glad the monitor worked out. It was a simple one but it was good for just starting out. I'm sure your friend will put it to good use.

Everyone, I got more stuff coming...not top of the line but still good enough to use. My wife and I are cleaning out the house and going into donation mode. We have been running into triathlon stuff here and there and I've asked her to put it aside for BT instead of the salvation army.

If you still have the medium jersey I would love to have it. I currently do not have anything to offer as I am just starting triathlons as well. I ran my first race in august and my second in September. I have not started purchasing any tri specific stuff as of yet, but am saving for a bike and running shoes. I love this sport! I have never participated in a sport where the participants are so giving and nice!

I'm a college student, and have NO money.  I am planning on trying and getting my elite liscene in the next two years.  I really think I found something inside myself this summer that is capable of greatness.

But, I've never had a swim lesson- ever.  And of course, a coach (even a mentor) is out of the question as I can not pay, and I live in rural Vermont, where the # of triathletes is low.

I would GREATLY appreciat the freestyle CD.  I have been looking at total immersion CD's, but just can't justify spending the money.

PM sent!

greenmtnman ... I've got the Total Immersion book if you want it.  My training partner is former ORLG so I have a built in coach.  Be prepared for the pages to be a bit crinked (tried using it at the pool).

PM me your address and please be patient!  Takes me a bit to get to the PO!

Foolproof- pm sent!  Man, this site is just about the best on the internet.  I really would not be in the place I am here in the local circuits without the help of BT'ers.

Hi Jon,

I am just new to the biking aspect and am totally clueless on technique. Would you be willing to send me the Carmichael CD?

I have the same Sugoi Tri Top with Shorts that auto208562 has pictured in his post.  Size is XL.  I tried them on, put 'em in the closet and forgot about them.

They really need a new home with someone who will use them.

If you only need the top or bottom, I will split them up.

Anyone interested?

Great thread and great idea!  I'm so happy to hear about that HR monitor.  It was just sitting there collecting dust.   Never thought it would get to its fourth user!

I'm gonna clean out the tri closet and see what Ive got.

I've got a pair of Ladies Size XL Bike Shorts (worn once) if anyone is looking. I'm looking for any swimming related items, as I'm just starting to get in the pool more (after spending a few months getting over my fear of my face in the water

I don't have the gear, but I can offer a free lesson...
I'm a fairly decent swimmer (swam competitively for 10 years) who lives in SE Wisconsin. I would be able to meet someone for a free half-hour of technique coaching at the Whitewater Aquatic and Fitness Center on a Tuesday night. I know it's pretty specific in terms of day/place, but since I'm there anyway I thought I'd offer.

To encourage others to get more involved in this sport, I have given away in the past 2 months a bike (specialized allez), running shoes (brooks-worn twice by me), swim cap, swim goggles, and a bike helmet....so I am pretty much emptied out now!  But I think it is a GREAT idea!!!  If I come up w/anything else, I will post

I wish I was in Wisconsin. I would jump on this in a heartbeat. This is a great idea, I wouldn't even think of "services" like swim lessons.
