Pre-race routine:

I stayed at Susan's so we good get a good start. We were up a little after 5 am and on the road by 6 am. I had some banana bread, coffee and ice water on the drive up. We took alot of back roads to get there, but it was a gorgeous ride and we were able to enjoy it, since we had plenty of time. Of course we got there way early, (thats what happens when you put two type-A personalities together!). But we were able to get our transitions set up and visit with friends, so that was nice. I really struggled as to if I should wear my wetsuit. I tend to be very uncomfortable with one on and can get a bit panicky when it feels like it's choking me. I decided I needed a good T1 time so I left it off.
Event warmup:

No warm-up, except 3 trip to the porta potty. I started off the race very well hydrated!
Swim
  • 26h 29m
  • 820 yards
  • 3h 13m 44s / 100 yards
Comments:

This was the absolute slowest swim I've ever done and I honestly don't know why...I have no excuses. I thought the first half went really well, infact I felt like I was swimming pretty fast for me...the 2nd half I knew I was going slow, but I couldn't seem to change it. I was pretty ticked when I came out of the water, becasue I knew my time wasn't good, but you should have seen me last night when I figured out my pace! What's frusterating is I don't know what went wrong. I'm seriously considering hiring a swim coach.
What would you do differently?:

Swim like a fish instead of....I don't know, a drowning rat?!
Transition 1
  • 01m 32s
Comments:

I told Susan, that I thought they should invent a new sport called T1/T2. I think I could actually compete. My rank on T1 was 21. I was in and out and it felt great!
What would you do differently?:

nothin:)
Bike
  • 42m 24s
  • 12.43 miles
  • 17.59 mile/hr
Comments:

I felt really good about this ride. I pushed hard and although there were lots and lots of hills I still felt strong. It's probably the best I've ever used my gears and I was even able to pass quite a few people going up hills. That's a real acomplishment for me.
What would you do differently?:

Felt good about this.
Transition 2
  • 01m 1s
Comments:

Again, another good time for me. I'm learning to get off the bike running and I was happy with that. I'm still not in clips, so that helps on T1, we'll see how I fare once I have those in the spring. My rank on T2 was 25.
What would you do differently?:

Again, not much.
Run
  • 32m 7s
  • 3.11 miles
  • 10m 20s  min/mile
Comments:

After the bike I was having a tough time getting in the mood to do a run. I really would have been fine if the race ended after T2. But...it didn't. So off I went. I felt like I was moving in slow motion and was convinced I was runningat 16 minute mile, but I refused to walk and kept plugging along. After the 1st mile I actually felt alot better and got movin'. When i looked up results last night, i was absolutely floored that I was averaging a 10 minute pace. You never could have convinced me of that during the race.
What would you do differently?:

Be more confident and really keep track of my time, it would have helped me mentally if I'd known I was running the pace I was.

The swim is a really tough part of this sport.  Hang in there and you will get faster.  A coach or a Master's group is a great way to go. You absolutely smoked the bike and the run - woohoooo.  Plus you had super speedy "T" times.  Way to go!!!!

You had a great race!!! Congrats on the run -- don't know why you thought you were slow-- you were trucking it every time I saw you :-)  The swim can be frustrating, and some days it just doesn't click-- it'll get better-- plus, those of us from states with no water have an extra hurdle to overcome :-) Congrats on a great race!

Great race!  I hear you on the swim.  Looks like you had a great bike and run... don't forget, the swim is the least important part.  Keep working though and you'll get where you want to be. Congratulations!!

You, my dear, had a great race! Don't beat yourself up over the swim. You'll get better at that. Great job on the bike and especially the run! Like Susie said, you were definitely trucking it every time I saw you....and you passed me pretty quickly! ;o) Great race! Looking forward to seeing you there next year!

You had about the same swim time as my first tri; not fun huh? Don't feel bad, just think how much better your overall time will be if you improve your swim a bit. I knocked about 10 minutes off from my first swim to my second.
