Sunny
Total Time = 2h 00m
Overall Rank = 98/209
Age Group = 25-29M
Age Group Rank = 9/14
Pre-race routine:

Flew from LA to SF Friday to see some friends. Nice relaxing day Saturday. Went to a wedding Saturday night in San Jose, arrived in Arizona at 1:30 AM. Woke up at 5:30 AM to make it to the race in time.
Event warmup:

None.
Swim
  • 18m 41s
  • 1000 meters
  • 01m 52s / 100 meters
Comments:

Due to race set up I was swimming through people the entire time. Ran into the slower 1/2 IM swimmers and the faster 1/2 IM swimmers who were on their second lap around the course. Water visibility was poor so difficult to see a person even if they were directly in front of you.
What would you do differently?:

I am happy with the swim. Wouldn't mind going faster but I am happy.
Transition 1
  • 02m 26s
Comments:

I put on my shoes and then run in them. I can't put them on while riding on the bike. (At least not yet.)
What would you do differently?:

I would bring a bucket to sit on while putting on my shoes. A guy across from me had this and it looked very convenient!
Bike
  • 1h 29m 3s
  • 28 miles
  • 18.87 mile/hr
Comments:

Still a little nervous on the bike after the crash. Generally felt good the increased training on the bike has helped. Need to get more comfortable drinking while riding.
What would you do differently?:

Drink more. Not spill Gu all over my handlebars. :)
Transition 2
  • 01m 42s
Comments:

I tried to leave the transition area with my helmet still on. I owe a volunteer a beer for reminding me. :)
What would you do differently?:

Again the bucket would have been nice.
Run
  • 1h 06m 51s
  • 6.55 miles
  • 10m 13s  min/mile
Comments:

Given the IT band issue I am currently experiencing the run went great (I finished). I need to get well and then the run time will decrease accordingly.
What would you do differently?:

Have 2 good knees. :)
Post race
Warm down:

Wait for my friends to cross the finish line.

What limited your ability to perform faster:

My knee. Lack of liquids on the bike. General lack of sleep due to the unexpected events the days prior to the tri.

Event comments:

I thought LA was better for the post race activities. This race more geared to a Half-IM would definitely recommend the course for first time half-IM (flat bike and run courses). In fact, I hope to go back next year and do my first Half-IM.

Mike, I did the 1/2 this weekend. Glad to hear that you finished. Sorry to hear about your knee. I agree that the swim was a bit crowded. I am from AZ and know some of the race directors/personell, the course was supposed to be one loop and was changed the day before the race. It is a good course for first timers and hope you can make it back next year for the 1/2.

Thanks for the comments. I had a great time doing the tri and will definitely be back next year for the half-IM. Hopefully with no unexpected weddings the night before.

BTW: Nice race IronDan! I'm especially jealous of your bike and run times. Something for me to work towards for next year...

Awesome job in the race!  I am sure I was one of those slow 1/2 IM swimmers you ran into - (was it you that ran into me? - lol)

Hopefully I'll see you there next year!
