Subject: Miami Student Foundation Tri...
Hi all,

Has anyone competed in the Miami U Triathlon that is hosted in April? I did my first Tri at Deer Creek at the end of the season, and of course I am hooked and looking forward to next season...

Just want to know any details you can share with me...

Things to know, about course, area, etc

Thanks
Andy

I know several people that have raced this race.  I don't know everything about this race.  But this is what I do know.

The swim is in the Miami pool, serpentine laps.
The bike is pretty hilly, likely a lot more hilly than Deer Creek
The run is pretty normal.

You should be able to find some RRs for this race.

This was my first Tri and I loved it. HFP is very well organized, the MU tri kind of caters to new triathletes, and it is my alma mater. I will probably do it again next year.

I have done this race the last two years and plan on doing it again this year.  It is well organized and lots of fun.  The swim is in the pool with one person starting every few seconds.  They line you up by the swim time you report with registration.  The pool is very nice and has fairly wide lanes, so passing is not too difficult.  The bike course has some hills, but really only 2 that I remember as being painful.  The run is flat.  Since the start is one person at a time, there really isn't pressure on the course.  You could be a really fast biker, but just started toward the back with the swim.  Great race to start off the season.

I did this race last year and it was great, I would seed yourself I little faster than you really swim though, I had to pass 20-25 liars and it was annoying!  It didn't really hurt anything... The race was well organized and there were lots of cheering people out there.  Definitely enjoyable, more hills than expected but I finished!

Do you need a wetsuit for this race? I know it is in a pool but so isn't the Tri For Joe and from what I have heard about that one, you wouldn't want to do it without a wet suit.

I am thinking of using this as a kick off for my season since I am only about 20 minutes from Oxford.

No wetsuits for this race.  The pool is inside and perfect racing temperature.  Tri for Joe race is an outdoor pool and it is cold espically so early in the season.

Eric - We must live near each other.  I live close to Oxford too (Okeana/Ross).  Only about 10 miles from Oxford.  :-)

Ross isn't too far from us I don't think. I live near Fairfield...but we have a daughter that will be playing volleyball at Borderline here soon, so we will be spending alot of time up on Campus for her practices and matches. So if you are ever on the campus on the weekends starting in January you just might see a funny looking bald guy running around.

No wetsuit for this one. THe difference in the Tri for Joes is that it is an outside pool filled up a week before and the sun has to warm it. Last year they said it was in the low 60's. I beg to differ.  If you are doing Joe's use a wetsuit.

This will be my first triathlon and I am looking forward to it. Ironic thing is I decided last summer to do this one and my daughter, who is a freshman at Miami, is a member of MUSF.

The swim is my achillies heel. I started with a swim coach about a month ago, but still have a lot of work to do. When I registered, I told them to put me LAST, so hopefuly I don't get in anyone's way.

I am looking forward to the bike and run. Miaimi is a beautiful campus, and I can imagine the scenery in early spring will be neat.

You could try the Middletown / Monroe area on I-75. that will put you about 45min away from Oxford.
You could also try Richmond, Indiana. I think that it is about the same distance but not sure. You can take US 27 straight into Oxford.

I am not sure if there are any B&B's in the area but that could be an alternative that most people don't think about.

Hope this helps,
Andy

Well it is 8 weeks from today and I have a long way to go with my swim, but I will get there. Looking at the snow outside makes me more excited for the race to get here as it will mean spring has sprung!

Has anyone heard what types of numbers they have registered so far. I thought I read somewhere they had over 400 last year.

I finally committed and reigistered today. BT seems to have three listings for this race, but it looks like BT will have a good representation!

THis was my very first tri last year and it was the perfect first race. It was a lot of fun and well done.

FWIW, I will be driving to Oxford from Cincinnati the morning of the tri. Oh, and I'm an alum. I will definitely be hitting the Bagel/Deli shop after the race.

DTraub....How was your first tri? This will be my first and needless to say I am very anxious. My concern is the swim which is my weakest. When I registered and they asked for my time I told them just to put me at the end. My fear is I will get in the way of "real" swimmers.

Bagel and Deli must be a popular place. Everytime I look at my daughters online bank transactions I see bagel and Deli a number of times.

This is a great race for your first. The swim however is so different from OWS. I think the pool format is tough when it comes to turning and going under lane lines - I hate that aspect.

Don't overlook Skipper's (it is right next door to Bagel and Deli). They have the best Chicken Philly Gyros - unbelievable!!

To anybody who has done this race. How are lane changes done. Can you push off in the lane you finished in and cross over underwater as you come back. Or do you touch the wall, go under the rope and them push off to come back. Haven't done an indoor swim Tri before so curious to know how this is done. Thanks

It seemed to me like swimmers did the lane change however worked best for them. I pushed off each wall and crossed underwater under the rope. Some did flipturns and pushed off at an angle to cross over. A few folks would stop at the end of the lane and kind of duck under.

To be honest, it worked fine for me, but the ends of the pool did get a bit congested if several people reached it at once.

The first few lengths were fine and not too congested. The last couple lanes got clogged with swimmers as the faster swimmers catch up with the slower folks who are slowing down at the end. I had to stop swimming a couple times in the last length because I couldn't get past a cluster of swimmers.

The swim goes by really fast. Unless you are among the fastest (first to start), you'll spend more time waiting on deck to jump in than actually in the water.

This was the perfect first tri. A LOT of the participants were first timers. I think MU offers a class or training program to prepare people for their first tri... a lot of college kids with mountain bikes, for example.

See post above re: the swim. It will be done with before you know it. To be honest though, the time I was standing on deck waiting to start the swim, was very anxious.... I kept thinking "here I go. I'm going to jump in that water. Yep only 30 more people before me. Oh, hey. now it's 20. I'm really going to do this. Now it's 10... here I go."

But the race was great. Well organized. Very welcoming to first timers. Lots of great students along the course cheering you on.

Also, I got there reeeealllly early to check out transition, watch other people warm up, try to get a sense of the place without feeling rushed/panicked.
