Stretching and short runs at race pace.

Great run - first mile was around 8 minutes, pace slipped slightly on following miles.
What would you do differently?:

Start closer to the front of the pack - had to "cross-country" most of the first mile, to get past the slower runners.

Thanks - it was a great race - especially since I smoked my brother, who used to be faster than me!!!
