Champion 8766 Evergreen, Colorado | Subject: RE: jldicarlo's group -- open Elliot - 2007-12-27 6:40 PM Room for 1 more? Quick Bio: Married (17 very happy years) with 3 kids, 14, 12, 9 (girl/boy/girl) and 10 month old "puppy" (70 pound chocolate lab!!). Started training around Thanksgiving 2006, joined BT in December '07 and completed 2 sprints last summer (NJ State, Buckman -- you can see my race logs). Buckman, in mid-September took a lot out of me and I suffered a few injuries and a nagging flu -- just returning now to serious training. GOALS: 1. Transition to Olympic for summer '08 -- registered for Philadelphia Olympic and hope to also do the Buckman again -- to conquer it this time (rather than straggle to the end (NJ State was an incredible race, but Buckman was WAY harder and I was not adequately trained for the hills)). 2. Trim down another 10 lbs and KEEP IT OFF. Always looking for encouragement and help in staying on program. Look forward to getting to know y'all. Welcome, Elliot! FYI, as the "parent" of a 4.5 year old lab...that puppy stage lasts a LOOOOOONG time. Mine is still in it. Thankfully she's "small" for a lab at 65 pounds. Whew. Going back to conquer a race can be an AWESOME goal. That race for me is Buffalo Springs Lake. I've done it twice but never felt like I OWNED it. Won't get the chance this year (deployed) but boy is it on my list for someday! Anyway, welcome aboard and I'm sure we can help you out with some encouragement. |

Champion 8766 Evergreen, Colorado | Subject: RE: membership questions stjohn2912 - 2007-12-27 7:31 PM I see that most of you are at least silver members.....I have been thinking about upgrading from the free stuff to a silver membership. For those of you that have a membership, is it worth the investment? What do you enjoy most about the added benefits? Jennifer you're a gold member, were you ever a silver or bronze member? I think the very first time I paid for a membership it was a bronze one. I upgraded to gold to support the site. I didn't really need any of the gold "goodies" because at the time I worked with Mike Ricci of D3 Multisport (same coach who moderates the coaching forum). Anyway, I still keep my gold membership to support the site because I think Ron does a fabulous job. And now I don't have a coach anymore so I am kinda interested in the plans. Though, I'm having a hard time picking one. |

Champion 8766 Evergreen, Colorado | Subject: RE: jldicarlo's group -- CLOSED ballyard7 - 2007-12-28 11:35 AM NAME: Ballyard7 / John STORY: I started running in high school as a way to lose weight. I ended up loving to run and have stuck with it ever since. This time last year i started getting tired of running everyday and wanted some variety. So i decided to do a triathlon. Luckly a tri group started up at my local YMCA at the same time with a bunch of beginners. So at least i had a few people to train with. So i did a super sprint in april and have been hooked ever since. FAMILY STATUS: Married for 2 1/2 years with 3 dogs and a kid on the way. CURRENT TRAINING: I'm on week 7 on a 20 week half ironman plan. I have a HIM in march so i'm in full swing. Although i'm finding the winter weather tough to deal with (for biking). THIS YEAR'S RACES: I did one half marathon, 2 - 10k's and 5 - 5k's 3 - 60 mile bike races. 1 - Duathlon Claremore OK sprint (April) - My first tri Tulsa Triathlon Olympic (June) - My first Oly Arkadelphia Mountain Man Oly (August) - Redman Half Ironman (September) - My first HIM...I was a little undertrained and ended up walking the last 4 miles of the run. It was a good learning experience though. As you can see, i didn't like the shorter stuff much and made a quick leap to the longer distances. 2008 RACES: Lake McMurtury Challenge (Feb) - Moutain bike race Ironman California 70.3 March Claremore sprint tri (April) Oklahoma City Half Marathon (April) Ironman Kansas 70.3 (June) Tulsa Triathlon Olympic (June) Hotter than Hell Hundred (August) Tulsa Run 15k (October) Route 66 Marathon (November) Redman 70.3 September Goal is to do Ironman Couer D' Alene 140.6 in 2009 A bunch of 10k's and 5k's throughout the year as well. My BIG 2008 season goal is to get in shape for the Ironman 2009 WEIGHTLOSS: I want to drop 10 pounds before March. Welcome, John! Wow, March Half Ironman! That sounds so...so....SOON! You are probably further along than all the rest of us right now! Are you using a plan from the BT site? You have quite the season planned! It looks awesome and I hope we can help you! |

Champion 8766 Evergreen, Colorado | Subject: RE: jldicarlo's group -- CLOSED dje101 - 2007-12-28 2:57 PM Background, I am 31, a paramedic, and former infantry marine. Since getting out of the Corps I have struggled with my weight. When I got out I weighed about 208 lbs and had very little body fat. Last year at this time I was up to 280lbs and enjoying all the food that I went so many years without. May 2007 I did the Indy Mini Marathon. Since then I have been casually training and am now down to 232lbs. I would love to take things to the next level and complete a triathalon, ( distance tbd) and a marathon in 2008. I am already signed up for the mini in may 2008. I think that this group will be great for me and will be a way to hold myself accountable. I have a lot of questions when it comes to training and what program is suitable. I have never really raced on a bike but look forward to the challenge. I am just getting into the swimming and once I get into shape can be a good runner. I look forward to working with everyone. Welcome, Dan! That Marine background of yours is going to come in SO handy for racing. Every Marine I have met is very determined! It's a mental state that is going to come easily to you! We will help you get on the right track and stay on it! |

Champion 8766 Evergreen, Colorado | Subject: RE: jldicarlo's group -- CLOSED Whew, Okay. I think I have met everyone now. This mentor thing is going to be AWESOME for my post count. Everyone seems to have big season goals. I have always found that the best way to get to a big goal was to set some little goals. I plan to set monthly goals for myself in 2008. Is everyone interested in doing that? Here are my January goals: |

Regular 90 Cherry Hill, NJ | Subject: RE: jldicarlo's group -- CLOSED What knee surgery did you have? I had torn lateral meniscus way back in 1985 and with incredible luck, got in with 1 of the pioneers in using the scope for knees back then. I went 20 years without a problem, during which I did a lot of long distance running, etc. Then, in fall of '05, playing outdoor volleyball, I fell straight down on my knee and ended up back under the knife (or scope). Mostly, I'm fine but periodically, I get swelling. Tried the herbal remedies -- useless. I'll probably start the prescription synthetic injections since my knee guy says I'm showing distinct signs of arthritis . . . . "what a drag it is gettin' old". I'm waiting for cartilege implants, which supposedly their working on . . . . . anyway, I hope your rehab is going well. |

Anyway, I agree -- small goals accumulate and become a huge accomplishment. My January 2008 goals: 1. Achieve 90% in following my training plan -- do at least 90% of the training days at least 90% of each daily workout (perfection is just not possible (yet)) 2. Achieve 80% in my food program -- DASH "diet" 3. Participate in this forum. |

Sometimes Sunny South Florida | Subject: RE: jldicarlo's group -- open Hi Elliot, Good Shoes! I went today to a proper running shoe store where they do a video gait analysis and place you in the exact shoe you should be in. We narrowed it down to the perfect shoe and... they don't have my size! So, next week I will have the right shoes when they come in, this makes me feel a little bit better than just going down to the local Sports Authority and buying a shoe because the price is right and it looks good. Going this route should be a little more knee friendly. |

Expert 939 Tulsa | Subject: RE: jldicarlo's group -- CLOSED My goals for January 1. Stick to the training plan...I tend to make up some of my own workouts. 2. Ride the trainer even though it really sucks. 3. Add weight training 2x a week 4. Don't eat like crap on the weekends just because i did a 3 hour workout. Those sound like a good start. And if i can stick to those i'll be in great shape for the HIM in March. |

Champion 8766 Evergreen, Colorado | Subject: RE: Swimming - ugh stjohn2912 - 2008-01-01 7:55 AM Ok, I'm a 6'3" and 220 (during a lazy streak and 205 when I'm motivated). When I want to run faster I simply push harder. When I want to bike faster I simply push harder. While that mind set might work alright for those two disciplines, it makes me look like a fish out of water in the pool. I can't swim faster by pushing harder, I simply splash around more. Please help me out with some ideas for basic swimming workouts, something to get started with. Ideas about drills, types of workouts, etc would be much appreciated. Happy New Year everyone.... Okay, first off...sounds like you need someone to look at your stroke. You SHOULD be able to swim faster with a harder effort and if you can't you are probably very inefficient. So, get someone to watch you swim! You would be amazed at the difference just a few tips can make. As for workouts...if you're just making something up, I usually put something like this together for a basic workout: wu: main set: Does that help? Search online. There is a book called swim workouts in a binder that can give you some GREAT starting places too. |

LOVE the trainer. I'm going to have to agree with trainer suckage....I get bored very easy on it. I'll add my Jan goals to the fray... 1. Train consistently 6 times per week. This one may be tough next week. Week long working vacation so to speak in HI. The work related activities occur throughout the day beginning at 5 AM. LONG DAYS too be had. 2. Begin my structured program on Jan 17th. 3. Follow my training protocol. 4. Better diet 5. Schedule the annual medical and dental check-ups. |

Champion 8766 Evergreen, Colorado | Subject: RE: jldicarlo's group -- CLOSED Re: Trainer. You have to MAKE it interesting! Set up the trainer in front of the TV and pop in movies. Movies you have never seen before are ESPECIALLY good. Do intervals. Don't just sit there and spin for an hour. If you're watching a TV show, bump up the resistance during commercials. Or do 3x5' HARD with 5' easy spin inbetween. If you're constantly concentrating on the riding, it won't be boring! |

I'll pick on Dr. Hammer because this one stands out: Goal: Better diet. Not very quantifiable. It's better to say something like I want to bump up my fruit/veggie consumption to 4 per day. Or, limit myself to one beer per week. Goals need to be measurable. At the end of the month it would be hard to say whether you had a "better diet" or not. Does that make sense? |
