This is my first Triathlon. Who else is racing in their first Triathlon and what is your goal? Is it just to finish or more? What made you decide to give it a tri and why did you choose this race if it is your first?

Hi, there - and welcome!

I did Smithfield last year as my very first tri...and it was great.

I picked it because I still am was afraid of the swim portion and I figured a pool tri was the best way to start. The folks that run Smithfield (Setup) are great and the race is well run. The run is out and back so there's a lot of folks to see. The bike is challenging but not hard - there's a wicked nearly switchback turn and uphill about halfway out, but other than that, it's just overpass type hills. The BBQ afterwards is nice.

I must admit that the pool swim is a big reason for choosing this event. I'm not too worried about swimming in open water but want to use this as a springboard for future races.

Thanks for the info on the race. Happy New Year and good luck in 2008!

I'm not to sure if I'll be doing this race but our Tri club(CAT, Colonial Area Triathlon) will have a few people that are also BT'ers. If I don't do it I'll be supporting Set-UP as a vol. Welcome to the wonderful world of triathlons.  I'm sure that you'll fall hard as almost everyone who's done them!!

Michael, Sorry that it's taken me so long to get back.  Holidays were a bit crazy and I got a bit lazy. I still consider myself a newbie although I have done a few races. The only thing I can say is HAVE FUN.  I never take myself to seriously and my goal at first was to just finish.  I started this crazy ride at 40 with never having done anything competative. My friend Klynne talked me into it after having battled a bad back for three months. I started out really slow and did well. Beat my time goal and was hooked. My goal for this year is to do the OLY, Patriot weekend. I checked your logs and by what you've been doing you'll be great!! Hope that you consider joining the CAT club.  We have alot of great people in the club and a few are doing their first Ironman races this year.

Hi,
I am doing it. Really looking forward to an indoor pool swim. When you think about it we do most of our swimming in the pool. What a great place to do your first tri. Good Luck and Have Fun. Karen

I will be at Smithfield for my first triathlon too. Last February I started working out casually, then I really got into it more and more. I have thus far lost 30 pounds since then and was looking for an outlet for my achievements. Finishing the race and enjoying the accomplishment is my main goal.

Hello,
My first triathlon. I've been working out off and on for a couple of years. Wanted to find a goal to work toward. Tri sounded like a challenge. I'm not sure what to expect. Looking for any advice anyone can give.

Charles,

If this is your first, the Colonial Area Tri club will be having a tri clinic sometime in March.  That will be a great place to get your questions answered. Our club will be having its first meeting of the year at the Toano library Mon, Jan 14 at 7pm.  Come by and check it out. We are planning to do more group rides and more group training this year. We are new club and this will be our second year.  We have great people with verying experience, newbies to ironmen.

Susan, VP of CAT club

Hello All!!!!!!!

I'm am looking forward to this race, it'll be my 2nd of this season... 1st one being a small all Indoor Triathlon at my school.

I have not done this race before but it's at the end of my spring break and I figured It'd be a blast!! I know people who raced it last year too so that helps.

Goals: I don't really have any, just go out and give it my all. I'll be doing a huge, I mean HUGE!!! week of training during that week, my final build for Ironman Arizona, so my legs will be pretty trashed by this race after about 20+ hours of training.

I'll be the guy wearing West Virginia University Tri Gear and perhaps still rocking this mo-hawk.

This will be my first tri. I think I have a co-worker convinced that he should make this his first also. I really want to do some of the Xterra events but thought this would be a good place to show me how my training has paid off. My goal is to finish with out being tooooo whiped out.

This will be my first triathlon. I've been thinking about giving one a shot for about a year and finally decided I just needed to sign up and do it. My goal is to finish and see what the experience is like. I chose this one because of the distance, the swim being in a pool, and being early in the year so I can decide if I'd like to try another later this year.

I am not racing this one it is too short for what my goals are now. But it would be a great one for a first timer. The reason I do tri's is because it is a mental and physical challenge and will almost bring you to tears upon completion. You will never be as proud of yourself as you are when you cross the finish line. For me I've gone to small tri's to 1-2 marathons and never thought that I would be at this level. Use this to better you life and to meet new people. Good luck and in a few weeks you can call yourelf a triathlete!!!! All you have to do is finish dont give up and you might just catch the tri bugg. Good Luck.
