  • Comments: Dear Friends In June 2012, we hosted our seventh annual triathlon to benefit cancer research in the memory of husband, Dad, Grandpa, and friend, Gary Kirby. With our gift this year to Duke Cancer Institute in the amount of $17,222, we will have contributed over $113,000 in the past seven years to fund research to find new cancer treatments and cures. It is with much mixed emotion that we have decided to put off the triathlon as our fundraiser for 2013. We know we will miss the excitement and joy on the faces of our participants but are also so thankful for all that we have accomplished with your help. To Our first time triathletes---When the Gary Kirby Triathlon was first planned; the course was designed to encourage first time triathletes to compete. So many people chose the Gary Kirby Triathlon as their first triathlon. Thank you for choosing to honor our race and allowing us the privilege of seeing your triumphant joy as you crossed the finish line. Keep on keeping on!!! To

  • Comments: I was greeted at the finish line by my wonderful wife and my four kids. They were all very proud of what I had done. I was now a triathlete. I grabbed a bottle of water and a banana and soaked in the atmosphere. I was proud. I was tired. I may have had a slower than anticipated swim due to hurting my hand, but both my bike and my run were better than I expected. My speed on my bike came in at 18.5mph! I couldn’t believe it! Then my run came in at a 10:15min/mile pace. I had set a personal goal of finishing in 1 hour 25 minutes – with anything below 1 hour 30 minutes being okay. Well… I crushed that goal. My official overall time was 1:19:46. That overall time put me pretty close to the middle of the pack. I finished in 83rd place out of 154 entrants. I am very excited that I have completed this first step in my “I am no longer lazy” plan. I have my next triathlon on my calendar – and a lot of training miles to put in between now and then. I am going to adjust my training

  • Comments: A great race overall and well run by FS Series. The Kirby family showed great hospitality. Great crowd support throughout the course.

  • Comments: This was my 1'st sprint that wasn't a super sprint. I feel very good about how this race went for me. I think I needed some confidence and I hope this race will give me that. And since my next two races are getting long this was just what I needed especially on the bike. Although this race was so much fun I told my husband we just had to find another sprint to do this season : )

  • Comments: I think I made a good choice to make this my first tri - difficult enough to challenge me yet not so large and overwhelming. Most everyone was friendly and welcoming, and it's for a great cause. I wasn't sure doing a tri was for me while I was running, but afterwards I was already looking forward to signing up for another event.

  • Comments: No AG awards at all. Only Overall awards. Kind of s*cks as all the other races acknowledge the AG's.

  • Comments: As this race gets more and more crowded, it's not quite the purely enjoyable race it has been in the past. Maybe I'm just out growing it or it's out growing the venue. Great for 1st timers and a lot of fun for a casual training race.

  • Comments: Nice easy-going atmosphere. But you can't have an unmanned turn though, or if you do, you should just make em all unmanned, rather than every one except one be manned. Anyway, that stuff happens. FSSeries seems to be slow with getting the results posted (meant to be up by 9pm tonight and it is 8:51 and there is nothing: update, at 10:45 they posted that the results will be up Monday at noon). Setup usually posts them the same day and for a small race this should be almost immediate. They had trouble with the Tobacco Rd race too- some AGs were muddled, etc so I think FSSeries has some work to do on that front). I am not a big fan of the pool swim thing but it was fun to try. Don't think I will do another pool swim race for a bit though- prefer a longer lake swim. Still, it is a pretty race with a nice atmosphere. And it's nice to be done in an hour or so, rather than 5+ hrs! haha And I am not at all stiff/sore the next day, which is nice too.

  • Comments: Perfect learning experience. It taught me things I know (need to work on swimming) and 1 thing I didn't....I CAN run better than I thought. I'll get better at both and hopefully can do this race in 2011, faster, with less effort.

  • Comments: I still love this race, Scott does a great job and the addition of bike racks was great! I left before the awards because the pool closed to competitors which meant we had no bathrooms at all after finishing. I know its a balancing act to be good guest and for them to be good host, but this just seemed rude. I tailgated one of the residents who raced, but given my bladder and all the fluids I was drinking it was safer for me to leave.

  • Comments: I can't explain it, but this is one I hope to do year after year. I know other races that are technically better, but I just have fun here.

  • Comments: I really liked the laid back and family atmosphere of the race. Without racks and chip timing it feels like a throwback race, which is really cool. A really great race for a great cause.

  • Comments: I really like the atmosphere of the race. I wish they had splits and racks for the bikes would have been nice. Its an inexpensive low stress race. Also I think it will be a good spectator race; 4 laps on the bike and a playground next to the pool and transition.
