  • Comments: This race is a great race in a great city! It so nice being able to do the swim in the harbor rather than in the actual ocean. Also, being able to ride the the military base is nice because you know they have traffic under control and you won't have to worry about drivers hitting you or cutting you off. And of course, being able to run right next to the beach and (this year) not having to run on the beach! I'd like to thank all the volunteers that helped out with the race! There were so many of them. For those of you that are thinking about doing this race in 2011 as your first 70.3 distance race, I would definitely recommend it. It takes place early enough in the season so that it gives you a reason to start your training on Jan 1, if not earlier. Also, because it's earlier in the season, the overall race temperature is cooler than a July or August 70.3 event. Just one thing, make sure you get enough hill climbing practice on the bike prior to this event. The 3 major climbs

  • Comments: It seems this race is a perfect mini version of IMCDA with it's rolling hills and flat run course. I'm definitely happy to have this event in my own backyard and look foward to doing it in the years to come. The only thing I could recommend is having a few more porta potties as the line got very long. I felt sorry for those who were still in line as race time approached.

  • Comments: I truely enjoyed this race and will do it again. It was good to experience this race with Dave who was completing his first 70.3. The race had plenty of volunteers many of them who are serving our country. Very organised. Shelley was a big part of this race. It started last week when I noticed that her name was on the athlete list. So, I sent a note to explain that I was racing and not her. Upon check in, her name and info was on the waiver card. So, I corrected that. I almost left registration with a swim cap for the W40-44 wave until I noticed the error. I was the only guy in my bike rack and finally my results reflected a start time of 7:17 not 7:37.

  • Comments: The volunteers made this race easy, fun, and on time. Everything went well and there were plenty of people to help if something wrong was happening. This was my first time racing in Oceanside and it will definitely not be my last.

  • Comments: Impressed with Oceanside. The volunteers were something else. The military volunteers made me smile. Being prior enlisted, I didn't like giving up my Saturdays. But not a single Marine had a disparaging comment. Everyone just smiled or had something positive to say. The Ironman organization held an mpressive event. As a local race organizer, I tip my hat to them. The Expo had all the right stuff. Wound up buying Speedplay pedals b/c they let me try a pair on a trainer in their booth. This race convinced me to upgrade to a carbon fiber bike. Overall, great race. Hit all my goals dead on. No body mechanic issues. Not even with hip flexors. Had all the power and speed I wanted (heat exhaustion aside.) In fact, was only 29 seconds off my pre-race predicted time. Thanks to Jeff for having me sign up last Fall.

  • Comments: Looking back now I don;t know how I made it out of the ocean. I wish I would have singed up for IMAZ but mentally I was not in it at all. My bike is not for sale and I am looking forward to tackling that ocean swim in Malibu in September. Going to continue to work on rehabilitating my knee and strengthen the knee. Looking back, I had a lot of fun, just not during the actual race itself while going through it. I am glad I did this and have a new goal to set new PR's on this horrible time I posted. Physically I was ready, mentally I was not.

  • Comments: This race will challenge you on the bike for sure. There are a few hills that some people had to walk. As for the run portion, there are a couple of minor hills but very flat and by the ocean for most of the course, very pretty.

  • Comments: This is an awesome venue and it was very well organized. My only issues were with the lack of real food at the "athlete's lounge" and the horrible traffic getting out with our bikes. Athlete's supporters were lined up along the paved road getting out, causing a major log jam, and forcing us to walk in the sand, carrying our bikes! Thank goodness Kathy was there to hold my T-bag, I don't know if I would have had the energy for all of that! I would absolutely do this race again (and get that swim time down!) I don't know if this belongs in "race evaluation" but I would like to thank everyone who sent us their prayers and positive thoughts. Special and most important has been the support of my wonderful, supportive partner, Kathy who withstands my crazy training schedule, but gently reminds me about balance. Suzy, thank you for answering my mayday and being a great friend. Kyla and Linda, thank you for sharing your experiences. Coach Steve, thank you for understanding and guiding

  • Comments: This was a good race. I think I have to sign up again to try to beat my times! PROS: Challenging course, beautiful scenery, great weather and awesome volunteers. CONS: The only real bummer for me is that by the time I got to the registration they only had 3 t-shirt sizes left. REALLY? This is my first HIM event and you don't have a t-shirt that fits me. Didn't we give them our t-shirt size when we signed up?

  • Comments: I really can't imagine a better event. Every detail had been thought through and the support was truly spectacular. For example, EVERY run station had probably 20 voluteers each screaming out 'water' or 'gatorade' or 'gel', etc. The bike course was incredibly well marked. And the weather was spectacular. It was tough leaving a place like that, but had to fly back to reality last nite.

  • Comments: My one complaint is that all they had at the finish food tent was chain bought pizza. ICK! No fruit, no juice, no bananas or bagels or anything else. I wasn't in the mood to eat, but an orange might have been refreshing. They did have LOTS of great stuff at the aid stations, including cola, chips, cookies, bananas, oranges, ice, ice soaked sponges. Ooooohhhh -- I should have just gotten some ice chips on the run. That's what I did at Barb's last year. An Ironman branded race was on my goals, so now I've been able to strike through that one. Yippee.

  • Comments: This is an awesome event. The race directors can't control the elements. What they can control, they do well. It is easily the best run triathlon that I have seen and it rivals the organization of well-run big city marathons.

  • Comments: Good race. Should have gone through T1/T2 a little faster and I would have beaten last year's 5:10:01 (I missed it by exactly 90 seconds). This race was a progress check to see how badly my missed training due to heavy work commitments has affected me, and I was pleased to see that I still have the ability to skim the 5 hour mark in a HIM, despite about a 40% drop in training. All in all a great race - I shall be back again next year. I LOVE this race.
