  • Comments: TAPER: I'll start by saying that the taper leading up to this race was probably the worst I've experienced in any race. In the first week of my taper I felt extremely low almost considered hanging up racing after this race. I think I was trying to take on too much in the form of a second job and this caused everything to almost come crumbling down. I definitely need to learn to say no. The second week wasn't much better, but after talking to some of my experienced teammates and coach, they assured me that all would be fine and it's just part of the process. By the final week of my three week taper I started to feel physically ready and I just needed to get get mentally ready. I knew I was physically prepared. I had dropped 20 lbs since racing this race last year and I've trained consistently since then. I just needed something to commit myself to giving everything I had. I posted the following on my facebook page two days before the race in order to "commit" myself to this thing.

  • Comments: The last minute announcement about closing 51st and having a shuttle system was a crock on both parts, they apparently had the road open at several time and two tiny buses for way too many spectators. I was lucky my family made it for my finish, apparently many others weren't so fortunate.

  • Comments: In retrospect I'm a little disappointed in myself. I could have pushed a lot harder. I used the fact that I'm racing Iron distance in a month's time to not push myself. I do this to myself and it's like a kick in the butt. Re-focuses me. It seemed like I was a lot more motivated to crack 5 hrs at Elephant Rock and that wasn't even a race... oh well live and learn.

  • Comments: My goal going into the race was to break 5 hours. Ultimately I fell short of that goal, but still set a PR. I walk away satisfied with my time, but with the feeling that I fell a bit short. This is just the motivation I will need to train hard to get fitter and faster. I really enjoyed this race. I think the course was fair and the scenery is amazing. I plan on doing it again.

  • Comments: What a race, it felt so good to just lay it all out there, and even if he were to catch me, I still think I would have felt the same. Knowing that you gave it your all and had nothing left to give. What a feeling! Today: Paying for that "laying it all out" thing I did race day. My hamstring hurt so bad last night that I didn't sleep a wink. Still worth it though! This was my 5th time doing this race. And every year has been hot, but I think this year was the hottest! I hope I can break the 5 hour barrier someday. Year 1 5:54 Year 2 5:38 Year 3 5:34 Year 4 5:08 Year 5 5:01

  • Comments: the post race events and sponsor tents were shutdown when I finished otherwise the event was well organized. the official race shirts with athletes names on the back were missing names, and since I have the worst luck with those types of things my name was missing.

  • Comments: I have never done this distance before so I didn't know what to expect. I knew I'd learn something. I learned: 1. I need to hydrate more and replenish salt 2. I need to reapply sunscreen. Once isn't enough. I had two goals. First, I wanted to finish, which I did. Second, I figured that if I had a good day I would beat 6 hours. I did that even though I bombed the 2nd half of the run. I'm very happy with my performance!

  • Comments: Awesome event with a ton of support. For me the run aid station did not run out of anything. Gatorade, coke, ice, sponges, water. Excellent event and awesome volunteers. Well supported.

  • Comments: While I really enjoyed this race, I think I might go back to the Harvest Moon if I do another 70.3 distance. The bike was beautiful, but the heat of August was just a bit too much for me. Especially being in the third to last wave to take off (I guess at least I wasn't last) Also, I about had a mental meltdown when I got to the food tent and they had "run out" of everything except fruit. It was a great course though! If it took place later in the year I would consider it again.

  • Comments: They ran out of pizza! Really? It sounds kind of trivial but after a terrible race the last thing I needed was to see the people before me leave with the last slices of pizza. My family waited for me and after 30 minutes still no pizza because they couldn't get through the traffic. I left hungry... Traffic leaving could have been much better organized as well.It took forever getting to the main roads.

  • Comments: Generally good organization from a very experienced outfit. Almost everything was run very well. And Boulder is a great town to do a triathlon in. My main disappointment was with the post-race provisions. After exiting the finishing chute competitors were left struggling to find a few inches of shade to shelter from the brutal sun, and it took some searching to find the rather disappointing post-race food and drinks

  • Comments: This was my first 1/2 ironman and I am glad I finished it. I'm not sure if it was lack of fitness or because I had never done a race this long before that i didn't have my salt nutrition figured out. I had chunks of dried salt on my arms a the end of the race! I am happy that I had a good bike and swim leading into the run but felt I should have been able to average a 9 minute pace on the run based on fitness.

  • Comments: This was my first HIM. Back in October I signed up for the series and started my true training on February 8th. I had printed the Ironman Boulder 70.3 logo and put it in my work notebook to continually remind myself of what was ahead. Through the training of long bike rides and runs it turned into a way for me to rediscover who I was. In a way I learned to test myself, what my limits were and what I was capable of. The other major contributor was this website. I never could have done this without the guidance, advice, and stories from every triathlete on this website. So Thank You to BeginnerTriathlete.

  • Comments: Start times were off a bit, I actually don't know what time it started since I didn't have a watch, but I believe they started 15minutes late? There seemed to be a longer gap between the 3rd and 4th aid station during the run than between the others. And that seemed to be the HOTTEST stretch of the run unfortunately... not that the other sections were cool by any chance though. Hot Coke does not make for a good aid station drink... room temperature maybe... but hot after sitting in the sun... NO!!!! I had to spit it out. Don't let little kids hand out wet sponges... they squeeze them right before they hand them to you, defeating the purpose of getting a cold wet sponge.

  • Comments: Overall, I'm pretty happy with my race. Even though I sucked it up on the swim and the run, I did well enough on the bike for an 11 minute PR. And I know I have a lot of room for improvement. I'd like to know how noone at WTC caught the fact that the finisher medals say 1.2 mile swim, 56 mile bike, 13.1 mile SWIM. Seriously. And also, the sizing of the race shirts was a big disappointment. Other than that, it was fairly well run.

  • Comments: I have to say that I am glad I did this race and am equally as glad that it is over. I don't have any other WTC race to compare this to but the race Tee-shirts were really really small and the finishers medals while nice had the wrong printing on them The medal says 1.2 mile swim, 56 mile bike and 13.1 mile swim. Huh? Shouldn't they have been able to get that right? As a side note, 1700 people signed up for this race and there were a little over 1200 starters. That seems like an awful lot. There were quite a few pros that never even started. It was great to finally meet Gaye and Pete and as always having Steve there made it a much better day. Also thanks to Matt (mcgilmartin) for volunteering and the positive words leading up to race day.

  • Comments: This is a great race, a beautiful course, and a terrific and supportive crowd - participants, volunteers and spectators all. IMHO The only thing handicapping this from being a five-star event are all the logistic and PR missteps by WTC. Sure hope they get their act together...
