Pre-race routine:

Easy day at work. I was going to arrive early to the park but then the skies opened with a deluge of rain and wind. Waited for the storm to pass. So I arrived about 4:30pm. Earlier in the week I got my bike tuned up.
Event warmup:

I swam in the water for ten minutes to get a feel for the temp.
Swim
  • 18m 54s
  • 890 yards
  • 02m 07s / 100 yards
Comments:

The swim went well and I think my time felt faster than the posted time. Some of the lost time was getting to the shore and not being certain if I should keep swimming or run in the shallow water.
Transition 1
  • 00m 45s
Comments:

I had a little trouble clicking in the shoes on the right side. No wetsuit to worry about on this warm night.
What would you do differently?:

I want to learn how to have the pedals and shoes ready for me to just jump onto the bike.
Bike
  • 33m 23s
  • 11.7 miles
  • 21.03 mile/hr
Comments:

The course was crowded with slower people from the earlier waves. I honestly got too much free speed from drafting behind people. I tried to pass or create space but it was crowded.
Transition 2
  • 00m 30s
Comments:

I went down the wrong row and I also struggled to pedal with my feet on top of the shoes.
Run
  • 25m 15s
  • 3.1 miles
  • 08m 09s  min/mile
Comments:

I think I had some room in the tank to go faster.
Post race
Warm down:

I enjoyed the free massage. The food looked good but I had little appetite. I was surprised at how much I did not want the sugar from the free cookies.

What limited your ability to perform faster:

Struggled with pacing on the run. How fast can I go in a 5k? Most of my training has been to get ready for Louisville so the speed training has been absent.

Event comments:

I love the live music, great food, and overall sense of atmosphere. I am also glad that the rain and wind moved past before the start of the race.

I have always been an athlete, growing up playing team sports like basketball and soccer. I also ran in a couple of 10K races every year, so I had no reason to worry about running a 5K...right?

After I left the running store, I couldn't stop thinking about the sprint tri and how much of a challenge it would be for me. So instead of joining a gym, I started riding my bike and it felt great.

I couldn’t help but feel that the race had beaten me. Perhaps duathlons were more for me? No, I was more determined than ever to succeed. I was determined to get on top of my swimming.

This life of mine is not so different from yours. It has a multitude of similarities. I suffer from uncertainty, I get nervous at the thought of registering and when getting to the starting line.

I am not going to buy a tri-suit before my first tri - I want to make sure I am going to stick with this before I spend a lot of money on it so I want to figure out what will work best.

I couldn't believe that my splits kept getting lower! I started to run harder after I passed the "5 km" sign and picked a few people that I wanted to pass.
