Subject: half ironman done after work?
I'm thinking of attempting a half ironman within a very busy weekend. I will have a really hard time to get out of work on saturday and would miss quite a lot of money by doing so. My race is on sunday( may 30) and i'm thinking of attempting it anyway. I will get out of work around midnight and my husband would drive me( 4hrs away) to do Black Bear half iron( 8am). Plan to sleap on the way

I understand this is completely insane. I will not race this but will used as a training day( doing IMCA in august. Has anybody attempted something like this and how did it go. and i'm well aware it's crazy to attempt it but i'm willing to at least try it.( unless my coach stops me..)

I just did a race last Sunday where I was on the wait list and didn't get a registration slot until 5 day's before the race.  No hotels rooms to be found within an 60 miles of the race, so I drove 3.5 hours to the race in the morning.  Had to get up at 2:15.  So, not completely like your situation, but similar.  Most people don't get much sleep before a race anyway.  If you can catch a few hours in the car and get some very good sleep the 2 or 3 night before that, I think you will be fine, IMO.  BTW I PR'd the Half by over 9 minutes so lack of sleep didn't impact me.

From what you are saying and your experience I think you'll be fine. I haven't done it for a tri, but I did drive 12 hours to a race, fell asleep for a couple of hours in the parking lot and woke up and ran the Grandmas Marathon. Certainly not optimal but doable.

Get in the back seat and stretch out and snooze.  Should be ok.

I'll vote for 'go for it' with the added note to get a solid ( 8-10 hours ) the night before you do this.

It will likely just put you on par with all the nervous types who can't sleep before a race. Lot's of bleary eyed people line up and do just fine once the race starts.

Thank you all !! I was kind of expecting lots of "you are nuts" kind of comments so i appreciate the positive feedback. I know i can do it and you are right in saying to get rest in the previous days. I feel better now..I will go for it! Nothing like BT to alleviate some of the worries.

Thanks gang!

For my HIM last Sunday I drove 11-12 hours down on Sat, did the HIM on Sunday and then drove back 11-12 hours. Sunday was a long day (4:30 am to 2 am). Ya I then worked Monday. I didn't have anyone else to drive, that would have helped. I would definately go for it if I were you. I am not sure that I would repeat my last Sunday with no 2nd driver however...with work the next am bright and early.
