I had my swim technique videotaped underwater tonight, and the first thing that was pointed out was that I am crossing my arms over too far in front of my head.

Is there a swim drill out there that can emphasize the opposite of this to correct this issue?

A coach gave this product to a friend because she has that problem:

I was able to correct that same issue by focusing on my stroke and doing a very exaggerated stroke, where I pull my thumb up the side of my body from waist to armpit then finish the stroke. It makes my elbow high and I have to put my arm in straight in front instead of crossing over. Not sure if that makes sense, I'll look to see if I can find a video of it.

Tilt your head a bit upward(forward) and see if you're crossing over. If you are.. then don't.

Or

Try dragging your thumb along your side on your recovery that should give you a straight recover(high elbow on recovery is the main purpose of the drill) and your hand entry should be better.

I think you are talking about the "zipper" drill. I haven't done that in a few months, but its always a good one. Thanks for the reminder.

Here's one ...

11 and 2 o’clock. Imagine your head is at 12 o’clock your hands should be in the 11 o’clock or 2 o’clock position when they enter the water. This is roughly in line with your shoulders. They should never cross the center line of the body. Try swimming slowly, and each time your right hand enters, say 2 o’clock. Each time your left hand enters, say 11 o’clock. Or, if it’ easier to remember, each time any hand enters, say ’shoulder’. Try to be aware of where your hands are through out the entire stroke, and do not ever let them cross the center line!

I wrote up a page about what drills to use with what problem, with lots of links to youtube videos...

I don't know the name of this drill, but it's what my coach made me do when I would crossover.   The drill is underwater recovery with my head completely out of the water lookin foward.  I could see my arms out in front of me and make corrections as I went along.  I tried to find a video of it but I couldn't, sorry.  Another thing that helped was video taping my stroke and watching it between during my workouts.

I try to mimic swimming on a surfboard, keeps my elbows high (vertical forearm position stuff) and keeps me from crossing over. I find that if I go a bit beyond what feels wide, I'm actually in the right spot.

My coach calls that the Tarzan drill. You swim with your head above water. It's virtually impossible to cross over if you keep your head still and look straight ahead. It over-emphasizes the feel of getting your entry point out wider.

Swim 25m Tarzan style (it will tire you out quickly), and then swim 50m "normal" with a concentration on trying to mimic the wider entry point.

When you're first trying to correct crossover, it might feel like you're entering way out to the side. You're not, really, but it will feel that way at first.
