Thank heavens I haven't signed up for too many races this year.

The arthritis is what is really bugging me. The pain is just nasty sometimes. I can't start walking without a very pronounced limp. 600-800 mg of ibuprophen can sometimes help, but I sure hate assaulting my liver like that.

Best guess is that I contracted it last fall. I have really struggled through training since November and finally decided to take a break and get checked out. I attributed the pain to training and poor posture at my computer, but really got suspicious when the pain became acute in my thumb and a couple of other finger joints. With any luck, the antibiotics will work in the next couple of weeks and I will hit the water, and roads again, but with much less intensity. I have decided to give up on competition this year and simply participate in our local race here in Nevis.

Best wishes to those of you that I have met, even if it was just online. With any luck, I will see you next year.

Damn sorry to hear that.  As an avid outdoorsman this always worries me.  I probably pulled 50 ticks off myself mushroom hunting this spring.  Get better soon.

That sucksCry

Glad you figured it out, at least. My mom has been through it twice - not a lot of fun.

I would normally make some clever remark about how most of us would love to be as fast as you are in a diseased state, hopped up on ibuprophen, but I know this is a serious deal, so I will resist.

Take your time and take care of yourself. Plenty of time next year for you to kick our butts.

Thanks all for the support!

Some days are really painful, others are good. Today was a good day. I went for my first bike ride since my last race in May. I went for 22 mi and felt pretty good through about mile 14. My shoe size has increased about a size and a half, probably due to swelling from the arthritis. I had to finish the last 5 miles of the ride with my left foot out and on top of the shoe due to the pain in some of the tarsal - metatarsal joints.

I'm going to try an easy 4 mi run tomorrow to see what I can tolerate.

Bryan, Check and recheck. I never had the "bulls eye" and if I had any other initial symptoms such as fever, I discounted them as something else. These ticks are tiny and very easy to miss. I have made sure that my kids' hair is cut short and they are inspected daily.

John, You can always take a swipe at humor.

Aaron, Thanks and keep getting faster. Your improvement has been very impressive. Racing at Alexandria with Lyme's disease and a kidney stone will make quite a story for me to tell.

Emily, Thanks for the well wishes.

Jeff, Good to see you this weekend.l

Thanks Kelly!

Thanks Pam! Remember me whining about my aches and pains at the water park? Now I, at least, know the cause.

I will be participating at the Nevis race, but I probably won't be competing.

I am feeling a bit better. The pain still exists, but it has attenuated a bit. I have started some training and will post in my logs later this week. I had a great bike ride today into the woods with my cyclocross bike. I will throw in some speed work next week to see what I can take.
