yep,
Subject: Bonkerific

I posted this in the Nutrition form with little help:

First off not sure this is the right place to put this question but figured it was nutrition specific.

This past weekend I did a 65 mile bike ride with around 4000ft of climbing.  Weather was around 78-80 degress with very little humidty.  I ended the ride feeling like complete crap and think I bonked.  I ended up going through 2 (16oz) bottles of Accelerade, 3 (16oz) bottles of water, a diet pepsi (probably not the best choice) and had two clif bars and a single gu, and snickers bar.

My question is if I had enough nutrition.  After the ride I had a significant amount of salt on my face.  I've never really had this before and I thought I brought enough fuel for the entire ride.

THanks for your help

I can only handle 300 calories per hour max, usually less. Did you eat too much? Had a bad ride last week after a big lunch. Stomach trumped the legs.

I don't think I had TOO much to eat.

8:00 am Bowl of Oatmeal and two peices of toast

10:00am begin ride

11:30 - break in ride and eat Clif bar #1

11:30-1:00 finish 1 bottle of water and 2 bottles of accelerade

1:15 - Gu and refuel at gas station

2:00 - feel better and realize how far away from home

3:20ish - BONK HARD! Stop to finish water and recover for last 5 miles of the ride.

So I don't think it was lack of water and food but more of maybe an electrolyte problem.  I'm just curious what I should experiement with.

Diet Pepsi?????  Waste of money and fluids.  It wouldn't do anything for you except wet your lips.  There is no "fuel" in it at all to begin with.

No, it was not an electrolyte issue or even a nutrition one.  It was a fitness issue.  This is the longest you've ridden in a really long time and your volume/mileage is not there so that you would feel fresh at the end of a really long ride like that.

Ditto.  This is actually what most people experience when they say they "bonked".  They simply got tired.  Has nothing to do with nutrition.  Just fitness.

Not even in the ballpark of a bonk. Where you delirious? Didn't know where you were? Couldn't string a few sentences together? That is a bonk.

You had plenty of calories actually to much, imo. You probably rode to hard. If you're going to drink soda during a ride, go with regular and at least get the sugar for fuel. You may have felt back because you had a ton of calories as well.

Interesting..I thought it could be a fitness issue.  I'll have to rethink my options for nutrition obviously.  Too many calories?  I always feel that since I'm sweating so much I need to replenish those lost fluids.  Am I wrong on that assumption.

No I could put a sentence together, but was pretty fatigued.

Sweating is replacing fluids not calories (those get replaced by calories burned). I would second too much nutrition and not enough conditioning, 4000 ft of climbing over 65 miles is a lot.
