So my wife comes home from work last night...fresh off her first HIM on Saturday...and announces that she wants to do IM 70.3 Hawaii next June.  (I guess it could be worse...it could be an IM...)

I've put her on the project of coming up with a realistic budget for the two of us to race it (which assumes I'll be recovered from IM St George 5 weeks earlier, but that's another story).  She's now concerned about it selling out before we decide if we can afford the trip (we're looking at sharing accomodations with others we know who are planning to do the race...that sort of thing).

So...how fast does it typically sell out?

I don't believe it sells out, but don't take my word for it.  I'm keeping my eye on that race for next year also.  My parents happen to live in Kona so it'd be a nice vacation for us.

Last year there were 1,100 or so who started the race.  I suspect they can handle more easily.

It did not sell out this year. I signed up about a month before the race. I highly recommend the event.

Won't be much of a "vacation"--we'll be there less than three full days and one of those we'll both be racing.  In part I think it's because a number of her Disney Tri Team teammates are going to do the race.  Since several days in Utah at the end of April/beginning of May are already planned for me to do IMSG, we can't really squeeze in another extended trip so soon after that.

if you do priceline in Waikoloa and Choose resort you can get rooms for 90 bucks a night, That will get you the Marriot, Hilton or Hapuna Prince. All nice hotels and right close to the race. We go over every few months and the most we have ever spent was 110 bucks a night. Much cheaper than the $264 list price.

As an FYI the Hilton and Marriot charge 15 and 20 bucks a day for parking/resort fees respectively.

what about bike logistics?

did you take it on the plane and pay the fee (50-200) or is it better to ship it between your LBS and one on the island?

I rented a hard case for $35. Totally lucked out and did not get charged a bike fee either way. We flew on Alaska Airlines. I even had a separate case for wheels.
