Overall Rank = 357/474
Age Group = 34
Age Group Rank = 43/47
Pre-race routine:

Wake up at 4am (slept on couch so I wouldn't make up my wife). On the road by 4:15. Ate a bagle w/ peanut butter and had a bottle of water. Arrive at 5am and set up transition area. Nibbles on an apple till about 6am.
Event warmup:

No warmup. Was there to have FUN and finish so chatted with HICCUP and NCCGRAP a bit.
Swim
  • 09m 27s
  • 880 yards
  • 01m 04s / 100 yards
Comments:

Was happy to keep a freestyle stroke the entire race.
What would you do differently?:

Good sighting and good time if were more like 1/4 mile, so no changes to the swim.
Transition 1
  • 04m 24s
Comments:

Guessing on transition time as I haven't seen an official posting of this info. Washed the sand of my feet and a quick towel pat down. On with my shirt and helmet. Had shoes already attached to the bike and two water bottles on the bike.
Bike
  • 57m 32s

  • 17.73 mile/hr
Comments:

Took at peek at my speed on a flat section early on and was 19mph (WOO HOO!!) Kept a nice pace throughout and could feel the hamstings working on the road bike. Stayed in aero for probably 95% of the time. Had FUN encouraging people as I passed them. Was fun to pass people as I got passed a LOT during my last race. Just kept telling people IT'S ALL ABOUT HAVING FUN and KEEP HAVING FUN!!!

Came close to a wipe out coming off the Indian Hills Road DOWNHILL on to Lake Shore Drive. Took a line to pass the woman in front of me on the turn and she ended up turning sharper and slowing down. I hit both brakes and felt the rear tire slide sideways a bit so I released both brakes and all was good. OOPS!!!!
What would you do differently?:

Not assume the person in front of me on a turn is going to maintain the line they are on. Assume they are going to do something I don't expect so I don't have any near wipeouts.
Transition 2
  • 02m 25s
Comments:

Rack bike...shoes and hat on..another hit of Hammer Gel and water and off I go.
What would you do differently?:

nothing.
Run
  • 34m 30s
  • 3.1 miles
  • 11m 08s  min/mile
Comments:

Had my watch timer set for 1 minute countdowns so I could run 1 minute and walk one minute. With the hills it wasn't practical to stick to that plan so I used it on the uphills and made sure to take advantage of gravity on the downhills. Had fun meeting people on the run and chatting with a few. Made the run go MUCH quicker and killer hill wasn't so killer when you have someone to chat with the pass the time.
What would you do differently?:

More bricks and more hill training.
Post race
Warm down:

Food and Fluid. Had to pee about an hour before I got in the water and didn't have to go again till about 2 hours after I finished and I was downing some fluids. Never felt dehydrated during the race though.

What limited your ability to perform faster:

Better endurance and more training. Otherwise, very happy.

Event comments:

Looking forward to this one next year, except perhaps the OLYMPIC distance. :-)

Got home to a note from my wife (and child), "WE LOVE OUT TRIATHLETE!!" Made my day even better.

Was glad to hang out with Hiccup, Coredump, and CindyK to watch Whizzer and MarkK finish. Sorry Nccgrap, didn't know where you were in your 1/2 IM when I decided to take of or would have held on to watch you finish as well.

Like others I say the swim was WAY TOO SHORT to be 1/2 mile. Either the bouys were placed wrong, we were sent to the wrong bouy, or they really didn't care where they place the bouys for the race. I DON'T SWIM THAT FAST!!!

Ty,

Great race yesterday and thanks for sticking around. It was a good day for all I'd say. You did an excellent job on the bike! And, it sounded like you had a solid plan for your run. Glad to see that you are enthused about training for next year. We will have to get together more often for group training days!
